Changing vac can on MSD distributer
I have been having timing issues on my 62 which has a 70 LT-1 engine (see other thread - https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...not-again.html). Anyway, I decided to try an adjustable vac can and bought one, but for the life of me I cannot figure out how to change it. The two retaining screws are 3/32 allen, no problem, but the black thing on top of the actuating rod appears to be some kind of plastic and not removable. I am hesitant to attack it to violently so I'm hoping someone here knows the solution.

That grommet will stay on. There is a snap ring you need to remove, that holds the pickup plate, the red thing. Lift up on the pickup plate, and push down on the advance rod..The advance will just clear and can be removed.

Just a guess, you may be able to remove the two screws holding the vacuum advance canister and pull it out enough to push down on the stem and disconnect it from the point plate. I have done this on a stock GM distributor to change the vac canister.

Here is a set of instructions for installing an advance lockout plate on a MSD distributor; follow these as far as getting the existing VAC out, then just reverse the procedure to install the new VAC.

Thanks for the replies and the instructions, but I cannot see any snap ring. Could it be turned so that the 'ears' with the holes to remove it are under the magnetic pickup? how would I turn it back?
