Default Clean inside of expansion tank?

My expansion tank has crud built up inside. What is a preferred method to cleaning it out?

Put some CLR in there and some small media like small stones seal off the nipples and shake it

Possible, however the engine was rebuilt about 10K ago. Seems like a decent rebuild, at least they put a set of Eagle rods in it.

How would you clean out the block in the car with the rad out? Just pull the plugs or ????

Gary - Once you get it cleaned up and the old corrosion is gone, do check it out closely to make sure there are no holes present from the freshly removed crusty stuff.

My tank was similar, not quite as bad as yours. I would check your tee that comes out of the tank mine was all rotted. I bought a new tank from Dewitt’s and then had it polished. I’m not saying to buy a new tank but it sure eliminates trying to clean out a old rusty tank that my give you problems down the road.

Maybe buying a date coded replacement is wise in this case. My own looked good, and still the upper hose nipple just...came right out in my hand. I fixed that, but the writing is on the wall, despite the tank looking quite good and being pretty clean inside.

I have seen the reproduction tanks with welded nippels that cost a little more .
