Default Coil differences 202, 087,091 etc

While hunting for a correct original 091 coil -
it occurs to me that any of a number of other GM points coils would work

but what really was the difference between the various available part #s. Outside of the obvious TI coils?

if there any difference at all between say an 091 and 202 or 087 coil?

I suspect resistance, inductance and input to output winding ratio, but that class was taken 60 years ago . Some of our electrical friends will be along shortly to clarify and correct.

Do a Google search here on the forum for these coils. There was a Thread a few years back that identified the differences and I believe the fact that the 202 was the service replacement.

That plus 65 solid lifter came with 202 and matching resistor.

These days it would be easier to find the Holy Grail than an an original 091 coil that still functions. There were some repros being sold by the usual vendors some months back but all had none on hand - Backordered. I called one vendor and ask if they had any idea when they might be in stock. He told me some interesting info. First, the reason everyone was at zero balance on these repro coils is because the one and only manufacturer (in Asia) went out of business during COVID. Then he told me that this vendor made several different outer cases but the inner components were all the same, 087s, 202s and 091s were all identical electrically - and even worse, the specs did not conform to any of the 3 originals - they would work but the energy draw and output were not the same as the originals. Good luck.
