Spare won’t fit in tub
What am I doing wrong? An aged radial tire I had for a spare which I never was able to get in the tub. So I purchased a new 775x15 bias ply and I bought a longer 8” lock bolt and replaced the shorter one, brought the air down in the tire to 15 lbs it won’t fit. Now what do I do ?
this make no sense, the tire wedges itself between the fiberglass and the bolt after the bolt gets not quite 1/2 past then no more room, after I released the jack under the tub the tire was stuck up in there I had to yank it down and out.
HELP

The modern 7:75 have a larger diameter than the original tires on the outside. I found an old original, and it fit perfect. The reproduction tire did not fit. Do you have a Reproduction spare tire compartment even press mold. I have found some of those that do not fit the tire either.

I'm not saying don't carry a spare. I will say that I owned a car for 31 years averaging almost 12K miles a year and I had leaks, but never a flat. I've had two flats since 1989 and one was- I think- sabotage. I mean, that was the longest wood screw I ever did see, about 8" long and it didn;t tear up the wheel well, I came out in the morning to find it there, and if I ran it over, it would have torn hell out of the car as it went round. Anyway. When did you last have a flat?
My advice is to get the skinniest spare tire possible, Surely some dedicated space saver spare fits our cars, It's a spare. Sure it's cool to drag out the perfectly matched spare wheel. But it won't have the same mileage as the others anyway....

Bill, if you can find someone in your area that still shaves tires, many shops did this in the old days to true a tire, they may be able to help you. I found a guy that does it for some of the circle track folks. It shouldn't require a lot of rubber to be shaved.
If you can find a recapper in your area, they may be able to do it too.
Good luck... GUSTO

I thought your issue was tire diameter, not width?
Those bolts will allow a fatter tire to fit but you will probably have the same issue with the tire being too tall.

If width is the issue, here is some information CF member John McGraw posted almost ten years ago:
I recall JohnZ posting similar information but I haven't been able to find what he wrote.
In any event, for the curious, here is a link to the ~10 year old thread:
spare too wide to fit
See posting #3.
When I asked this question of Coker tire many years ago, this is what I was told. While they use the original molds, DOT regulations require inflation immediately after molding. They claim this requirement caused the cross section of the tire body to grow, when compared to an original.

I put a full sized tire mounted on a TTO in my 65 Coupe with lengthened forward bolts....I want to say there were 10" long????

I bought an S-10 16" spare tire and rim at a junk yard for $50 or so. The bolt pattern is the same and it fits the tub without extension bolts. This setup is good for short runs. If you are putting the spare on the front, no problem. if you put it on the rear with posi, either move one of front wheels to the back to keep the rears uniform or drive slowly. Jerry

I realize the OP is probably trying to keep things as original as possible with a bias ply tire and I respect that.
For those unconcerned with having a correct bias ply tire in the carrier I have a 185/65/15 radial on an original rim and the spare tire carrier closes nicely with it.
