Default Steering column in/out play

My 64 - the steering column has about 1/2”-3/4” play - not side to side but in and out. As if you pull on the wheel - it feels like its gonna come toward you…. Is this just a weak rag joint? Or loose coupler? Or do i have another issue?

No, it is probably the lower bearing/spring/clamp. I do not know who wrote this but it is very informative.
Note page 2 and 9.

Steering column spring applies a load on the upper shaft bearing which will significantly reduce the free play you have now. The spring must be adjusted to between .010 and .030 "radial play"
.
