Default Corvette the Marque at Monterey

WeatherTech announced this week that the Corvette will be celebrated as the featured Marque at the Monterey Reunion this Summer. (Historics). To honor that we're planning a drive from Monterey down the Coast to the Big Sur Tap House for a few cold ones and lunch! If you have never driven down this section of Hwy. 1... you're missing out on something special. Limiting it to C1's and C2's. Should be a blast. Plan ahead. August 18th, 2023. More info on the Nor Ca. section.

I'll be in the Pacific Grove Auto Rally on that Friday, where the theme is also Corvette. My car looks like this, so stop by and say hello if you see it:

I remember catching Louie's '67 in the parking lot of The Monterey Historics one year, quite awhile ago.

When I was stationed at Ft. Ord in 68/9 I used to drive Highway 1 in my C-1 as often as I could.

HA! Funny man!

No, that is Grand Sport #003 back when it was owned by Bob Paterson, for my money one of the best GS drivers ever.

That's a good question to which I don't know the answer, but I believe you are right.

Corvette was the featured marque in 1987, 2002, and 2013. So, yeah, ten years ago.

Well, OK, before someone jumps on me about 1987, actually Chevrolet was the featured marque that year. And anything and everything with a Chebby V8 was entered. But Lordy, you should have seen all the Corvettes which showed up! Race prepared Corvettes which hadn't moved under their own power in decades were freshened up and were out competing with each other once again.

And when Bob Paterson and Jamie Mazzotta took to the track in Grand Sports #003 and #004, respectively, it was all over but the shoutin'. The ground vibrated each time they went by. Not a single Cobra was even close.

The 1987 Historics were a once-in-a-lifetime event. Ya had to be there to unnerstand. Ya just had to be there.

I hope the 2023 Reunion does justice to the memory of these past Historics. I really do.

The badest and fastest cars will run on Sunday toward the end of the day.

That said, if you can experience only a single day of the Reunion, you have my sincere sympathy. It is a fully immersive experience.

My wife and I went in 2002 . we bought a two day pass and sat in a special Corvette area with food and drinks. A little expensive but well worth it.
That was the year Vick Edelbrock jr blew his 63 Z06 up just across from where we were sitting .

Grand Sport #3 Patterson and Grand Sport #4 -Mazatta were both restored at Mike McCluskey's shop located in Torrance Ca.

Mike is a world famous Cobra restorer - McCluskey LTD.

That's one of the reasons you will see the mag wheel change after the 1988 restoration, both cars were vintage raced after the re-work and needed replacement wheels.

Typical shop scene.

The featured races are different classes Saturday from Sunday. Thus the best day, would depend on which races you want to see. It is way less crowded on Sunday, as Pebble Beach draws people away to that event. The cars are technically supposed to stay for the whole event, but competitors find excuses to leave if not running Sunday. Going Saturday, you can generally see all of the cars, but not necessarily racing. I have typed up the best weekend plan, but that has become expensive, and like the evening auctions are now restrictive to spectators.

My son lives in the Bay area and I am pondering coming up to get a taste of the whole Monterrey week thing.
He is going to be down here on Sunday so we can talk about what his availability is that weekend
and what would be worth seeing.
I have never been before

Forget your son's availability. If you've never been to one of these Corvette-stock events before, do what you have to do to attend this one. I don't believe you'll regret it. Ever.

Just keep a close watch on your Corvette! Many of you know what happened to our '62 back in 2013.

I would like to take our '67 to this event! I think I'll sleep in it this time!
