Default Restomod front clip: jig assembled vs hand laid one piece

What do you guys think about a one hand laid front end for a restomod car. The car already has wider gts quarter panels.

hand laid front ends are around 2500
press molded jig assembled front ends are 10000

do you think it matters on a high end restomod ?

thanks

High end resto-mod and hand laid fiberglass do not belong in the same statement. I put a press molded front end on my 66 produced by Lee Bumb and it was a very nice piece. I also used their rear fenders and again they fit great and unless you really know really what you are looking at you won't be able to tell from the original. If I recall back in 2014 when I bought mine I think the front end was $5800 I'm not sure what they cost now.

Is that confirmed from Coffman Corvettes? If so that is a 40% increase from May.

Note: I placed my order in November, 2022 with Corvette Image, prior to the sale to Coffman Corvettes

I ordered mine directly from Lee Bumb, Have you tired to get a price from them? That 10k number just seems quite high to me but the way things are today it wouldn't surprise me. Good luck with your project.

If it's any consolation, my first order went in June 20, 2022 and was cancelled by a big Corvette parts Company 5 months later for an undisclosed reason! (12 months)

You and I have been chatting
You can smooth the back side of a hand laid part
You can also Raptor coat it or bed liner - most of the Resto Mods are Raptor
Cheap and easy unless you want the bottom super slick sanded and shiny
Not sure Lee B sells C1 parts - I always bought from C Image which is now Coffman
Also you have options
Based on the photos - It may only need an upper surround and front lower valance....

I went with a hand laid unit for my 62 from what was then CI. Thats was about 3 years ago and just finishing the restoration project now (actually had its maiden drive a couple weeks ago). I also bought some of the bonding strips just to make it look a little more original. It did not need them structurally. I was very pleased with the hand laid unit. The quality of the molds they pull from must be excellent. I had to send one hand laid unit back the quality was so bad (diff vendor). The layup work was well done, but the molds they use were clearly sub-par. Also it was not as advertised as a 'one piece nose'. It was actually a 61 and 62 nose that based on the year you want, they bond on the proper section behind the front wheel well. Boooo. If you have a C1, you know that top of fender droop over the years of the nose taking all the heat cycles. That nose I sent back came with the fender droop built in ! At that time the CI hand laid was about $2200 as I recall. There are some that will argue that one piece is more stable than bonded sections. I believe that to be true and that is why I went with a true 1 piece nose. I don't need to worry about bonding strip areas telegraphing through the finish 10 years from now.

BTW... OMG... if that is the price increases from since CI was sold !!!! They either are price gouging now or need to pay off the note they bought the business with. I know 1st hand the price increases related to body work materials, including resins, paints, primers, etc. In many cases 100%+ increases over the last 1.5 years. So maybe that is in fact price increases driven by cost increases. But is seems a excessively steep price increase,

So glad I bought my new panel parts over 3 years ago and just about finished with the rebuild. I needed everything firewall forward. Luckily I had a rear clip in good shape. I bought the firewall and plenum panels from Lee Bumb, inner fenders from CI, and the one piece front end from Dynamic Corvettes.

BTW... i could not help but go see if the above price increases were real or not.. just seemed too far out there. At least on the CI website, the prices still reflect pre-mark up prices. My intent was to see, and suggest, what the prices were on hand laid units. That maybe the huge price increases were limited to the press molded assembled front ends. I guess the prices on the CI website are very misleading / incorrect now. But it might be worth your while to call and inquire about the prices of the one-piece hand laid units. Much less labor on their part to build... but will be much more labor on your part to trial fit the inner fender wells, set the hood height correctly based on adjusting inner fenders to push up or pull down on the hood surround, etc. But if you are like me.. my time costs me $0.00 per hour !!! ha ha !!! So maybe inquire on the hand laid price. As noted.. I was very happy with the quality of my CI hand laid nose on the 62.

Cheers

Coffman who bought the CI molds is not making any hand laid one piece front ends 🤪

Chris Sherman thank you for sharing all your knowledge. It was very helpful talking to you !

That is correct! Dymamic Corvettes does make HL panels.....They are considering the fabrication of PM panels per my conversation with them a month ago...
