pinion seal
I have a 54 and the pinion seal is leaking, I read a lot of threads that made me believe they are impossible to find. However, corvette central has GM part number 3707355 and their part number 581240 pinion seal for 53, 54 55. The guy on the phone said yea it says it works not exactly leaving me with the most confidence. Has anyone purchased one from them and can you confirm it worked? If this is the right one, is there are a torque spec for the pinon nut or anything else I need to be aware of swapping out the seal. Thanks!

Are you sure about that? I have all the NAPA buyer's guides which list seal dimensions. I couldn't find a compatible seal when the one on my '54 needed replacing a few years back.
I did locate seals from two sources and I bought from both. Good thing, too. One seal didn't fit and I believe it was the one I bought from CC. I've re-booted a few times since then and don't remember what the problem was. Fortunately, though, the other seal did fit and work properly. No, I don't remember where I found it.

There may be different replacement seals available that have the correct dimensions, but a correct fitting one that I used when I rebuilt my 54 rear end appears to be the same one referenced by TR54 a few posts up. It is a Timken 3583S. Mine also has the 17005 stamped number on it. See a couple pics I took before/after seal replacement during the rebuild. No issues with fit in the housing or with the flange.
The replacement procedure is detailed in the ST-12 service guide. 150-190 ft lbs is the torque spec for the pinion shaft nut.

I get most of my bearing and seal components fron either napa or a local bearing outlet. My bad.

I purchased all my differential parts from Hagens Auto Parts in WA.
They are no longer in business. Too bad, they had an awesome selection of parts. Many NOS too.

I saw Timken part numbers listed above. FYI: Timken is a quality bearing supplier but has never manufactured Seals. Timken uses the National Seal part numbers and National supplies most of the Timken seals under agreement. So if you see a Timken seal available check with National under the same part number and you can buy from the manufacturer. SKF/CR is one company and they do build seals.

The pinion seal is NOT hard to find
3583
National or Federal Mogul or Car Quest
I buy them all the time and have a stash of them
I have put 3 in this year
I have bought them off Ebay for as little as 6.00

Update:Corvette central pinion seal 581240 will work
Rock auto 17727 WILL NOT WORK.
I will buy a spare just to have one, however it seem like the new one from corvette central fixed the leak.
See the comparison pictures below.

FYI: I was searching for a front main seal today for an LS engine. National part # is 100470. Made in USA, Timken part # 100470 same price, Made in China. I was shocked, Timken had a supply agreement with National and you could pretty much guarantee a TImken box would have National seals in it. I guess that is no longer true. Sad, funny they are still using the same price point as National.
