[C1] Block stamps - real or restamp?

On the last episode of Graveyard Carz it made financial sense to spend $20k to use some semi-experimental method to weld up a 383 block which was badly cracked due to freezing. So the numbers were saved and someone will pay a hefty premium for it when functionally a replacement block would probably be better.
Crazy? Pretty much, but that's where we're at.

Things change depending on people’s individual circumstances.
Here is my personal example.
I have a very nice low mileage 1965 coupe with original drivetrain and most components like alternator, water pump etc. I am upgrading it to a 383 engine. If younger doing this I would store the original engine. At this point in my life I plan to die with this car. I have promised to leave the car to my son-in-law as he too is a classic car lover. So I asked him if he wanted me to save the original engine for him. He said that he would never put it back in the car AND that he would never sell the car. Well, I am already storing the original block for my 1966 L72 so I really did not want to be storing another complete engine. So as I said in the beginning something I thought I would never consider I have done as in selling the original engine. As I said, time of life and circumstances can change what in the past you would never consider.

Probably in its next owners life span it will be converted to an EV with golf cart components anyway.

I am so happy to have been born when I was. Baby-boomer, able to make a very good living with just a high school education, had the best music in the history of time, lived though the Summer of Love, the era of some of the most iconic cars ever built and lived to see Pot legalized recreationally in my state.

Thank you very much for all the detailed, accurate, knowledgeable and fun answers. The engine at hand has been offered to me at $10,000. It is a complete running engine that is said to have been completely overhauled and then broken in on a dyno. The deal wo uld include items such as teh fon "cross brace", the chromed cover in the back of the engine and an air filter assy (most likely repro). I was interested in as I though teh price was sound and you never know what might come in handy At this point I am not sure wehter or not I'll be jumping on it

A running rebuilt correctly dated mated engine is in itself worth several thousand, the FI unit itself is worth several thousand and the completeness of a couple misc. parts is worth an intangible amount.
You haven't said what you are putting it in and what the engine incremental value to you might be.. if you have a car within a date range that this would mate with then this might be worth an additional increment also.
I did the same thing several years ago when I had a complete rebuilt early 1970 LS5 all date matching for sale. it would go great in a 70 Chevelle or a 70 corvette. but ultimately could not find a buyer for my asking price.
just have to find a buyer wanting that exact engine.
They are wanting 5K+ for a rebuilt 327, throw in the working FI unit and the dates and stamps that you want and maybe its worth it.
