Default Would you be concerned about this???

I'm a little disappointed....

Jim Ranaha did an amazing job checking out a very clean, supposedly numbers matching '66 I'm considering. I haven't received the full report yet but I spoke with Jim and he said the car is super clean. Had a frame off restoration at one time and bushings, bolts, etc have been replaced. New starter, new gas tank, oil filter is updated to screw on, interior and dash refurbished, and the paint is about a 9. He said it is a very good driver and will show well, but not Top Flight stuff which is ok with me.

And here comes the BUT....when he reviewed the engine stamp, he found that it appears there is 7 stamped over the 0, and the trim tags is a "rolled ID tag"

So my question, if I don't care about this being an NCRS judged correct car, is this going to be a problem with the future value of the car? I mean, the guy is asking $80k but Jim still thinks the car is worth this price as a driver and will hold it's value.

Thoughts???

As I’m still learning, what is a rolled ID tag?

Yeah that stamp is horrible. Is it what you want? Is that stamp going to keep you up at night?

Way overpriced and a guaranteed issue at resale. Keep looking.

If you like the car, price is negotiable. Good luck.
I'm with @elwood13 , what is a rolled tag?

And how does the stamp on the frame compare?

And those "broach" marks are not all straight, as I would expect they should.

Looks like it sold for 48,500 at some auction at some time in Florida:

And another sale listed for 56,500:

I have no idea. This is what he sent me: "The trim tag would not pass ncrs if judged there are numbers missing they called it a rolled ID tag"

When you're driving down the highway at 60 mph in a badass looking Corvette, nobody can tell if the numbers match or not.

With that poor picture of the Tim tag you can’t tell anything

It's a lousy picture, but on the paint code, it appears like a number is missing. Looks like 97_ AA. Should be a 3 digit code.

Here are the paint codes for 1966.

972 Ermine White
974 Rally Red
976 Nassau Blue
978 Laguna Blue

The difference being the current $80,000 asking price vs. the previous sales listed at $48,500 and $56,500

Pass. There are better cars to roll down the highway at 60 without feeling like your wallet was abused to the tune of $20k.

I am curious as to what the current owner’s explanation is concerning the bogus stamp and trim tag?

What he said... There is nothing special about it. And it has several strikes against it, ie. Wrong side of the country for you (you can't see it in person easily and shipping costs), questionable Trim tag and stamp pad, over-priced for today's market, especially with no desirable options. Be patient, keep looking. The car for you will come up..

Buy it if you like it!! That is the important thing!

If you are investing in this potential purchase........You will always have to explain away the engine stamp and VIN plate to an inquiring Buyer, which both do not look right at all........Those two Items will always hold back a Top Dollar Sale! I.M.H.O.!

I personally would PASS...............If pulling the trigger, I would inspect for hidden problems............

Added Note: If 80K is the asking price..........Walk away!!!!

Good Luck!

I agree $80 is too high. The posted sales history doesn’t help a lot unless the date of the sales are known. Could have been 5-10 years ago?

Thanks for the advice everyone. I don't believe the guy knows about the engine stamp and trim tag. He traded a '62 Caddy convertible and some cash for it about 4 yrs ago. The restoration was done prior to it. I'm going to talk to him about it today, but if he isn't coming down in price quite a bit, I'm gonna pass

Don,
I can only think that he knows!!! We must assume that he does! And that he has not been disclosing very important information.....Talking to him with help with your decision! This is the way I would feel about this sale.....If he does not know about the issues, then there are other things that need to be looked at professionally prior to any sale.....

Having owned a ‘62 Caddy previously, it would seem the guy has been around enough to know particulars relating to classic cars. Having owned the C2 a few years now and claiming ‘don’t know’ to important questions doesn’t pass the smell test, IMO.
Questionable history and priced too high…..I’d walk away too.

John
