The purpose is to protect the line from damage by road debris, rocks, etc., see below, the picture was posted by one of the members here of an original installation, however, note the line clip has been removed.

I’ve wondered if the coil was partly to prevent build up of road crud and mud on the line to delay corrosion. I’m guessing the coil provided not only shielding but minute vibration and movement/flexing may prevent direct adhesion of the crud on to the lines surface. Just a guess.

I don’t know about that, I would think that it would tend to hold dirt and moisture and promote corrosion (but maybe it would keep moisture/dirt off the fuel line?), however, that fiberglass sleeve (loom) in the other picture was definitely there too dampen vibration of the run within the frame channel

Frame kick up is front of rear tires. Fuel line exits frame in this area on 64,

Zanny1 - "Only experience I have had was the gasket between the filler neck and the tank leaked." Same issue here as I live in AZ too. Replaced old single ORIGINAL gasket, which was mostly gone, with 2 new gaskets after cleaning up the tank and fuel filler neck. I have a coupe and it was pretty easy with the help of other forum members guidance. Mine is a 1965 327/350 stock. Now...no gas smell inside the car and the garage is much happier.

So, you can replace the new gasket without removing the gas tank?

How often does the gasket need to be replaced?

I would check to see if the sending unit has a leak. Even a tiny leak will stink up the garage.

Yep....see the attached PDF instructions in my response above. My gasket was original so it must have been 50+ years old....so it is probably a 1 and done repair unless you are planning on living a very long time. Only removed gas cover and went in from above.

My corvette builder at his Classic Car Restoration Shop said:

He told me with an open throttle body system whether carburetor or EFI gas vapors and fumes penetrate into the air filter. The air filter gets all gassy smelling from the gas vapors. ALL New Modern Vehicles with an Enclosed Direct Port Fuel Injection System ( one injector for each piston chamber) gas vapors never escape into the atmosphere.

He recommended to get the filter(s) as far away from the throttle body as possible, thus filters will not get gas soaked. He recommended something like the Plenum shown below.

you're looking for a solution to a non-problem if everything is up to par. old cars were stored in basement garages for decades. do you think your grandma would have put up with grandpa's stinky car. with all the old cars dad and I have our garages do not smell like gas. nor should yours. if it is there is a problem that needs to be fixed pronto

My two cents is that I drove a big cube muscle car engine I built in a summer daily driver for decades including in the 21st century. Over 250K miles on that engine in one form or another, 455 to 462 stock manifolds to big tube headers, big deal cam...no smells unless you count molten rubber lol. My fuel system was stock except for a Stage 1 fuel pump from...Poston? TA? I forget.

I never had gassy smells from my carb. And big cube Buicks like big carbs. My air cleaner was a stock GS455 type with a regular old nothing fancy filter. Filter never smelled of gas wether I parked it in a garage on a hot day or it was run in storage at my little shop. I'm sure it can happen for one reason or another but with everything strac in my car...never happened to me and I owned that car for 31 years.

That said....you're not blowing unburned gas out the exhaust are you?

Get a woman to sniff that car and walk around. They have a much better sense of smell than us guys.

I had the same issue for a while. Turned out that the fuel pump was leaking between the two halves at the crimp. It was only visible while running, and only smelled if put away in the garage hot. Worth a look.

Default Problem 3/4 solved

Thank you to all that replied. I doubled up two new gaskets at top of the filler neck and it helped. Smell is almost gone. My wife of 36 years is part bloodhound and claims it still bothers her. 🤷. Wife is a 61 model, low mileage, well optioned, but my 65 roadster is priority. Lol.

The modern gasoline formulas mixing with a carburetor as one poster mentioned makes sense to me.

Glad it worked! I drive mine a lot so this is not a current issue but, during Covid lockdown, it sat for a while up on jackstands as I reworked/rebuilt some of the back end. I wrapped the Aircleaner/Carb top with a very thick piece of plastic and the gas vapor smell was also cut down appreciably. I also replaced the fuel pump for a little weeping I noticed. My wife is a 62 model and loves seeing the Coupe sitting next to her truck.
