Removal of steering box
On a 67 L79 how do remove the steering box? I have removed the pitman arm. I have removed the three bolts holding the box. I have loosened the 12 point rag joint bolt to the column. I cannot extend the box long enough to get it off the column. Do I have to remove the column?

You have to loosen the column brackets under dash and the clamp at the firewall and slide the entire column assembly back enough to clear the coupler.

If you just need clearance to pull the steering box, you should be able to just pull your steering shaft out of the column a few inches. Check out FLYNAVY30's technique starting at post #24 in this post

67 columns are of the collapsible type. First year . Pry the lower part of the column up from the rag joint it should slide up for clearance use a big motha pry bar

The upper barring retainer is not that robust by prying in the column on angles it was not designed for I would think you would run the risk of damaging it.

It's a collapsible column designed to be collapsed the angle is straight up the length of the column not from a freak collision but as intended . There is no damage to be done unless there was prior wear. This was and is an acceptable practice at every dealer and repair shop .
