Default 1963 Plastic Woodgrain Steering Wheel

My question is this…… I have a 1963 SWC with what I believe to be the original steering wheel. It’s a plastic woodgrain. Did they really only have 130 cars ordered with the lightweight steering wheel? My car is going to Auction June 3-4. Is this really a rare option? It’s hard to believe to be truthful. I’m just looking for the correct information on this option. I was looking at the production numbers & options & stumbled across this information.

I can’t answer your question but do wonder where you got the idea that the wheel is somehow “lightweight.”

63 wheels have a unique aluminum finish for the core. 64-66 wheels from a foot away look just like 63 wheels. but 64-66 wheels are common 63 are not. take a close-up picture

130 N34 simulated wood steering wheel was a late addition in '63 and through researching it, was ONLY available on saddle tan interior as all wheels were color coordinated to the interior. Sorry I can't remember who furnished info. begee22

You would have to have a late production number for the plastic wheel. That is why the low # sold. It also looks out of place because the 63 steering column is painted interior color the matching wheel looks a lot better. 64 they painted the steering column black to match the instrument cluster and the plastic wheel locks perfect.

looks like it has the typical machine marks on the spokes that are on the 64 thru 68 to me, they should be circular.

Guy in state has a car he ordered new with the woodgrain optioned wheel on his November of 62 Daytona/Dark Blue int. car if this helps.

The machining marks on the earlier '63 wheels' spokes are circular. If I'm not mistaken, later '63 wheels' spokes show a radial brushing pattern. The wheel that was on my March-built car, which I presume to be its original wheel, shows circular marks. I say "was" because I've replaced it.

Live well,

Correct. My late built 63 had the radial marks. I too replaced it with a teak wheel. Noland discusses that in his volume 2 book
