Cleaning Aluminum Valve Covers
I am pulling the engine on my 67 to freshen up the engine and engine compartment. Looking at the valve covers got me depressed. I drive this car so a good clean-up is all I am looking to do. Any suggestions are appreciated. Al W.

I ran mine thru the dishwasher, just don’t use the heat dry cycle, it will turn aluminum dark gray. Ask me how I know…

Definitely avoid using anything caustic like oven cleaner; some dishwasher detergents are pretty harsh too. Consider how it turns baking sheets dull and mottled looking.
I'd use something specifically intended for aluminum, like a wheel cleaner or something made for aluminum pots, pans, and baking sheets. For a shine, Mother's Mag Wheel Polish is a fine polishing compound.

The technique to use depends on the neglect level of what has happened to the aluminum.
Guys using simple cleaning to sandpaper. Maybe best to show us the cover, to get the best recommendation..There are these fiber wheels that clean up bad finished aluminum. Use them even on shower frame rails.
