Might want to move this over to C1/C2 Parts. Also just FYI, understand there are two variations of the 66 Gas Door, depending on if it’s an early or late 66.

I have a '66 door from 45 years ago when it came on my '65. Traded that out for the proper '65 design and still have the '66 in my parts collection somewhere.

This is all the information I have regarding the topic, perhaps someone else has something more absolute.
From the NCRS Judging Manual 5th Ed.
- from VIN 0001 thru approx 8,900 the checkered flag had a white square in the upper left
- between VIN 8,900 & 26,400 they had a black square
- after VIN 26,400 they reverted back to a white square
The Manual does suggest these VIN ranges are a general guideline, and not a clear delineation of actual production

Thank you for the info - now to dig it out.

The info above (post 5) directly contradicts itself (perhaps intentionally to illustrate uncertainty?)
Top says early cars had white square in upper right - which means black square in upper left.
Bottom says late cars had black square in upper left.
FWIW, my car is in the 14,000's and has a white square in the upper left

I believe there were 27,720 66’s built. So they went back to the “early” design for the end of the run. But yeah, it’s confusing, and I don’t think there’s any confirmed info available.

I think which ever one you buy, if you plan on having it judged, the black and white flag is supposed to match the emblem as on the front of the car. (1966 NCRS Technical information manual and judging guide page 76.
I am glad this came up as my non original filler door is cracked in three places and I need to get a new one. Mine does not match the front emblem and if I am going to get it replaced should get the correct one. Thanks Mark

Trim Parts makes a reproduction that looks very nice but is not 100% correct for NCRS judging. The dimple in the center of the backing plate and the casting number in the hinge area differ slightly from the original design. Typically, this results in a very small (1 point) deduction in NCRS judging.
However, since your car is a '66, you have another option that is not available for other years. Starting in 1967 and running up into the early 1980's, the GM service replacement (GM dealer parts counter part) for ALL C2 fuel doors was the '66 style. So, zillions of the '66 door were produced during that period, and NOS examples can still be found.
If you decide to seek a NOS part, keep in mind that some of these are 50 years old and the chrome plating has deteriorated even though it was never exposed to the weather. So, don't assume that just because the part is NOS in the original box, the chrome is still good. Also, some of the service replacements used a screw in the latch that differs from the original Filister head screw, but that is easy to correct.
