Need Radiator advice
Who makes the best radiator, for cooling, my 67 L79 Coupe. The stock one overheats in traffic and in hot weather anywhere. I put a Stewart pump on it, new thermostat and a clutch fan. It boils down to the radiator. Griffin is here in town and we deal with them but need to know which actually does the job because the old stock Harrison is not doing the job. Thanks

DeWitts without question. They make a base model radiator for your car and a restoration radiator...both listed below.

There are a LOT of issues that can create overheating in our cars besides the radiator. DeWitts makes the best for us, hands down. But overheating can also be due to
1. Bad/incorrect reading temperature gage. Check with IR gun.
2. Clutch fan not engaging at the contact 180-195 F temperature. The newer fan clutches often engage at higher temps
3. Bad fan placement in the radiator shroud or a incorrect radiator shroud.
4. Missing radiator seals
5. Engine vacuum advance not working correctly
6. I can go on, but you get the idea..........it can be other things not working correctly.
We need more info on your specific issue, engine temperatures, and whether an issue at idle or moving. Also engine idle vacuum and what vac can is installed, and is it working.

Clogged radiator-restricting flow?
It took me 4-times to burp all the air out of my system. Its fine now-idling and driving.
Good luck

I like the Dewitt's product also. Proven over time to deliver a top notch radiator but having said that a Harrison original in good shape, good flow, no leaks etc. should be fine.
You have been changing parts without having a diagnosis.
Flush the block and rad? You may have sludge in both.

He referenced overheating in traffic. So my picks sre....vacuum advance bad or not connected to full time vacuum, fan clutch, wrong or not working properly. He also said the old Harrison is not doing it job. DeWitts will do the job. Dennis

67 Coupe, 300hp, factory AC, in hot weather (95+) and high humidity, 185 highway, 210 traffic, and 225 idling. I have a Dewitt's restoration radiator, tight shroud, 180 t-stat, and new Hayden clutch. I have been advised on this Forum that is not out of the ordinary and won't hurt a small block Chevy.

He may even have a copper radiator as I did when I first purchase mine many years ago. It did fine until I reinstalled the original A/C and then couldn't handle it. This was nearly pre-internet days so it took me a bit to discover I had the wrong radiator. I've been running a Dewitts ever since and even with the 500+hp, no issues!

Yes, I have the flap. I also closed the space in the shroud in front of the alternator. That space is supposed to help cool the alternator, and at highway speed that may be so, but at idle air is sucked out of the engine compartment through that hole and returned to the engine compartment accomplishing nothing. Put your hand down there you can feel the air recirculating, especially if you rev the engine. With the space closed that air comes through the radiator. At least that is my theory. I even have some tape sealing and gap between the radiator and the shroud.

Yes I've checked all of that and replaced most all but radiator. It's the original, as I stated in my thread, and kinda boils down to that. No Pun
