1958 283/230 Cam
Sorry to bother for such trivial information but does anyone have or know where I can find the true specs and part # for the '58 283/230 cam? If the original grind is no longer available, I'd like to stay close (or maybe a few degrees warmer) to the original. Cheers!

The '57-'66 base engine cam was replaced by the 3896929 for the '67 model year and became the service replacement for the prior cam. This cam is offen referred to as the "300 horsepower" cam. Millions of these cams were installed in small blocks over the next decade or more. Duration is slightly different, but the biggest improvement is milder dynamics. You can find basic specs in the proper year Corvette information packages that are a free download from the GM Heritage Web site.
Don't get hung up on specs. For any given cam you may find multiple specs that are different because they were measured differently, but rarely is the full context provided so you often end up comparing apples and oranges.
The ...929 will provide the same general operating characteristics as the original cam including the smooth 500 RPM idle and excellent low end torque. If you want "more power" massage the heads.
The Sealed Power CS-274 is an exact duplicate of the GM ...929. Before Federal Mogul parts started drying up a few years ago you could buy this Sealed Power cam from NAPA for about 50 bucks.
If you can find one buy it and use it.

Thanks Duke. Depending on the information source, I've seen a wide variety of cam specs for that engine. None of them state whether they're measured at 0", .008", or .050" lift. That's a big help to select an equivalent stick.
