Is the tach connected to the distributor with a tach drive cable? Have you checked the condition of the gears in the tach drive distributor?
Is the tach an original 63 factory tach?
Pictures would also help.

My car was not original when I purchased it. So, I decided to do a complete frame off restoration with several upgrades. One being the engine, ZZ4 crate engine. The original tach was for a 300hp engine, worked fine. I replaced it with a higher hp unit to go with the engine. As far as I know the replacement tach is an original 63.

What type of distributor are you using with this engine? Is the distributor a tach drive distributor?
Have you checked the condition of the gears in the tach drive distributor?
Changing the tach from a low horsepower 63 tach to a high horsepower 63 tach should make NO DIFFERENCE. The only difference between the two tachometers is the redline rating on the face of the gauge.
Try connecting the original tach and see if it works properly. If so, change the face plates and put the higher redline face plate on the original tach.

The distributer is new, an aftermarket tach drive unit I purchased from one of the vendors on the forum. But changing the face plate sounds like an easy remedy.
