Default Ballpark price of a removable hardtop

I just bought my 67 roadster , with a soft top only.

at Cars & Coffee this morning, a guy says he has a hardtop he was thinking of selling. Only had 2 pictures, has headliner and rear window…

assuming it’s complete and decent (wrong int/ext color for me), what’s the price range I should be looking at?

thanks…

I paid $800ish for a complete, but disassembled hardtop I picked up locally off Craigslist. It needed a new headliner and weatherstripping. Can't remember how much that cost, but likely several hundred. I had it painted body color when I had my car painted.

There was one on BaT that sold for something crazy like $5k. I suspect most are under 2k depending on condition.

Finding one local would be a bonus as I suspect they aren't cheap or easy to ship.

Just saw the pics of your car in the other thread, looks nice! It wasn't setup for a hardtop though so you'll have to add some holes to the decklid and buy the trim pieces and hardware. Not a big deal, but just something to be aware of.

Default Will you really use it?

From the pictures that you posted in another thread it appears you live somewhere that experiences winter weather. If you expect to drive it in the winter with salt debris Etc on the road the hardtop might be worthwhile. However, many people with hard tops, including myself, often do not have them on in colder weather when their car is usually off the road. Another issue is that if you leave your soft top folded down while you have the hardtop on, it can shrink and make it difficult to get it to snap into place when you try to use it in warmer weather.

I paid $1300 for a matching top for mine, and it needed nothing. There was no shipping involved.

On the other hand, restored units are generally $5k and up.

Since you just got your car, I recommend that you wait until you are through or mostly through next year's driving season. You may find that you don't need or want a hardtop. I have a '67 convertible also and I rarely drive it with top up and have no desire to have a hardtop.

Nice complete top in your colors $2,500. And it normally takes awhile to find.

Sort out your mechanical issues first, then get use to your car before investing in cosmetic issues.

I agree, but I was just curious. The car has a basically "new" soft top (probably 40 years old, but clear window, etc).

I am in Norcal, no snow, coldest temps usually a few nights in the 28 degree range, so not really cold. Mid-60's today, etc...

My only thoughts were for the future, and if it was a good price it might be something to consider. I originally was looking for a coupe, not caring about top-down cruising...

I was just showing my new purchase at a Cars & Coffee event, and mentioned that I had been looking for a coupe. A random guy overheard me, and said he had a hardtop in storage, and gave me his number...

Thanks...

Tony

If you really plan on using it and you can get it for a good price, which includes any fixes, paint and parts replacement, then go for it. If you just want to have it for potential resale with the vehicle down the road, you're wasting your money. I have one that gets put on in the fall and taken off in the spring every year.

Default Hard top

I have a 67 with a vinyl covered hard top , I’ve never had it on and never will. It’s a summer time car.

The big cost factor here is not just the top but where it is located and weather that is going to effect your overall cost when shipping or transportation is involved.

I recently paid $750. For one in good condition that will need to have the headliner dyed to match my interior and painted to match my exterior. I live in AZ and the top was in Wisc. My brother in Illinois picked it up for me and will deliver it to me. Since I bought it I saw a similar condition one in Colorado (within driving distance for me) for less than what I paid for the one I bought. Realistically they don’t bring the “big money” some think as they just aren’t used as much as they were when these were new because they are fair weather cars. They often end up just being stored these days. In fact, I will likely never put the hardtop on my 66 car. I just bought it in case my heirs may have a desire for it.

I just read this whole thread and wish i had the luck that some of these posters did when buying a hard top for my convertible. I bought a hardtop in half descent shape and replaced the weatherstripping and headliner. I'd say costs for a nice hardtop would be $2500 to $3500 price range. I put the hardtop on over the winter and on nice days i'll take a ride, that is on a dry road. My soft top is folded all winter long in the car and i dont have any problems refastening when the hardtop is removed. I believe my hardtop will add to the value if i ever decide to sell. Good luck

Don't be in any rush in my opinion- wait for a deal. I got a hardtop with my 67 when I bought it over 30 years ago and it has been on the car exactly twice and one of those times was when I drove it home. Mostly it's in the way but I wont sell it.

I bought mine through the forum parts for sale and also saw the one in Colorado all within the last few months. I look at the classifieds every day and often buy things I really wasn’t looking for.

The only time I have ever seen any hardtop on a C2 that I have owned is the day it came off the car when I purchased the it, and the day it went back on when I sold it......

Take your time and don't be in a big hurry. Of all the important items you might be seeking, this is the least significant of all of them.

Merson's has some hardtops for sale to give you an idea of retail/dealer pricing, https://www.mershons.com/parts-and-service

As others mentioned, hard tops are nice to have if your car was equipped with one, I'd find one but not in a rush. I've used the hardtop on my 62 all of 2 times, the first when I brought it home after purchase, the other time when I moved houses and didn't have a safe place to store the top until the new garage was done.

Yup - those are representative of my situation as well. 50 years and 3 months of ownership now with the hardtop only having been on the car 3 or 4 times.

They sure do look good on the car tho!
