My first Corvette, almost mine
Well I have been looking for a nice C2 for a few years (decades really, but semi-serious for the past 3-4 years). I wanted to find a coupe, and just something "drivers quality" that I could cruise around in. Found one by chance and put down a deposit today...
I ended up finding a '67 convertible about 10 miles from my house. Trim Tag and VIN tags are missing, and it has a State-issued VIN tag, but that tag lists a 1967 Corvette sequence ("194677S1.....). Apparently the car was stolen decades ago....Its been repainted, presumably the wrong color.
Owner wasn't sure of the engine, just that he was told it was a correct 67 engine. Its been decked so no suffix or VIN... Owner has owned for 36 years.
Looking at the engine it appears to be an L79. Its a 327 (3892657), big 8" balancer, aluminum valve covers and the #490 aluminum intake. Tach "yellowline" at 6300, and "redline" at 6500 RPM. Generic Holley carb (not a 3810 or 3814). I haven't looked for dates or distributor numbers yet.
Softtop only, AM/FM (uninstalled), but no other options (manual steering/brakes/windows, etc).
Its been hit, with the front replaced before the current owner. Paint is also from before the current owner. I'd say its a "10-footer"...
I really don't plan on doing much initially (tune up, change fluids, rebuild carb, some cleaning and detailing), but eventually I hope to drop the tank and see if the tank sticker is there... More out of curiousity...
So excited, I can't sleep...

Congrats! If the tank sticker is there, you might be able to see it by removing the gasket around the fuel filler. I had a ‘67 and was not able to see a sticker. I assumed it had fully deteriorated but it’s possible the tank had been changed and the sticker was lost. Good luck with the purchase.

The only 67 tachs red lined at 6500 were the higher horsepower 427"s. If the tach is original, it may have been a 427, but so much has been changed, it would be hard to say. The hood should also be a stinger of course if it was original. The ship has sailed on originality, so it's not something I would worry about.

That's great! Original numbers-matching cars are cool, but there's nothing at all wrong with a NOM, state-VIN car that's been hit. It totally takes away any pressure to get "correct" parts and when you're driving it, it will be just as much fun. Congrats, and post pics!

Welcome, and enjoy! Like Railroadman said, numbers cars are great but there is something refreshing about not having to worry about "correctness" when doing general maintenance. Kinda like 10 foot paint, you dont have to worry about rock chips or light scratches from regular use!
Cheers!

of course, may have been pieced together as it was a theft recovery back then…
yeah, just gonna have fun, some cleaning and detailing and maintenance…
stayed up 3+ hours past my usual bedtime last night just thinking about it, and what I need to do first, and then browsing for parts…

Welcome! And lucky you, you found just the right car to have fun with and it looks to be in good shape. Let the maintenance and fun begin! Like others, I'll be for more details and photos.

Since he's already infected, it's too late to scare him off. So here's another factor - "spare time". I carefully analyzed the financial end of things, but there's just not as many hours in the day or days in the week as I had expected. Good luck anyway. It will be worth it.

It’s mine
Picked it this afternoon…. It was running really rich, do I rebuilt the carb tonight. Added new hose and in line filter too. It’s not the correct 3810/3814 carb, just a generic 600cfm single feed.
the fuel hose was really cracked and crumpling.
much nicer now, although late enough that I didn’t start it yet. I changed all the plugs, but only two looked a little wet.
I have want to get rid of that funky air cleaner…. And I realized, no ignition shielding.

Carry a fire extinguisher. The Element 50 is a popular choice, check it out if you're not familiar with it.
Make a hit list and nibble away at it. It's ongoing, but take time to enjoy the learning. I'll check back in about 3 weeks, I bet you have made great progress.

The air cleaner looks right for 67.
