65 starter and ignition switch issue
A couple of months ago I had an issue with the ignition switch. Cranked the engine over a couple of times, turned switch to off position but the starter continued to crank briefly. No problems since until today. Went out for a short run, turned off engine while opening the garage door, attempted to start the car but the starter only slowly turned over. Turned key to off position but the starter continued slowly turning over. Disconnected battery to stop starter. Positive cable was very very hot. Not that this makes any difference but had the starter rebuilt last year. Repair shop tested the solenoid as good. Replaced ignition switch maybe 5 years ago with NOS. What are your thoughts? Thanks in advance.

Sounds like the Bendix drive gear may be sticking in the flywheel a bit. Could be adjustment of the gear / flywheel clearance or a weak spring on the solenoid / drive gear bell crank / lever which pulls the drive gear back in out of the flywheel and also allows the washer contact to break the electrical connection. Could also be loose bolts retaining the starter to the block.
Unless the ignition switch failed internally or you have a short between the purple wire to the S terminal on the starter and a hot wire in the loom. A little testing with a VOM meter will sort out the power supply from the ignition switch.

I think you'll find the starter or solenoid to be the problem. Either the spring is weak or the gear is sticking when voltage is removed. Low battery wouldn't cause starter to try to crank when you turned the engine off.

Low battery voltage will increase the amp draw causing the solenoid contacts to weld stuck in the closed position. This may or may not be the problem as well as the other possible problems mentioned in this thread. Low voltage does not always cause this to happen, but it can and does. At this point, I would not reuse the solenoid until it was reconditioned or just replace it. The battery as well as the charging system should be tested. If that checks good the car should be tested for power drains. I would rebuild the starter as well.
