Ever get a ticket for driving your C1 or C2 with no tag?
Never legally drove a C2, but once i had a 64 for resale and i drove it 1 mile to a busy corner to sell it. Cop came out of a side street
Told my neighbor, a LEO, and he arranged for me to meet the police chief, and i explained, and he voided the ticket.
This is an old story, from when i was 23. I guess it is safe to tell the story now
Anybody else, no tag ticket?

No ticket, but a related story.
When I got my '64, it came from out of state and I had to get it inspected before I could register it. I took it to the local CHP office to be inspected (my avatar photo) and when I called to make the appointment I asked the officer if he was going to give me a hard time about driving the car there without registration. He said, "I'm not gonna bother you, but I can't speak for the Sheriff." I took the car there (it was only about five miles) and never saw a sheriff's deputy, so I had no trouble. I doubt I would have been given any trouble by the local cops, though, even if they did see me.

When I bought my 66, I was a college guy from Maine driving my old Jeep on a nice Friday morning in New Hampshire. I was looking for a summer job in New Hampshire (School was in Maine and that is where my Jeep was registered.) when I came across a guy putting a for sale sign on a 1966 Black convertible. I test drove it and told him I would be right back with the money. I then went to the Bank of New Hampshire, that I had no prior business with, and was able to get a loan within a half hour. I returned to the seller gave him the money, took the plates off my old Jeep and attached them to the 66 and took off to see my girl friend in Connecticut. A week later I went back and retrieved my Jeep.

Not related to a Corvette, but to show the effectiveness of Va State Police:
I purchased a small trailer on Friday evening while visiting family in Ga. Rented the UHaul bumper hitch for the family Buick wagon on Sat. On Sunday we headed home to Va. with only a blue recliner strapped onto the small trailer. We crossed all of Ga., all of South Carolina, and all of North Carolina (~500 miles) and were pulled over exactly at mile marker #1 when we entered Va. for not having plates.

When I was test driving my 63, had no doors, windshield or seats or tags. Proverbial 'bucket' seat. State trooper stopped me on a Farm to Market road. Just laughed about all the missing stuff when I told him I was checking out the engine.... no ticket.

I am the police(retired) so I'll give you the flip side of this scenario. I have pulled classic cars over just to look at them for absolutely no other reason and without probable cause.
I completely violated these owners 4th amendment rights concerning stop laws. I have never received a complaint for it from the classic car guys.
I've always looked at the classic car types as guys who preserve their investments better and above what is required by state inspection laws. So never saw a reason to hassle them.
Everyone left with a story for their car buddies about this cop that stopped me to look at my 57 Chevy. I think it was a different world 30 yrs ago.
Now if I saw a rent a wreck duck taped together w/o a plate going down the road, I towed it for public safety. They called me the "HOOK" in the early 90's. I can share these stories now as the statue of limitations for prosecution or persecution what ever it is called today has expired.
Drive Safely.

in 1975, i got pulled over by 3 different cop cars in Washington Twp NJ in my 61. All within minutes.
By the 3rd car, when he pulled along side, i told him i was going to the beach and i didn't have time to stop.
He said OK, and i kept going.

I hear if you don’t drive on the public roads without a tag on your car, they won’t pull you over.

When I had my car painted I trailered it to the paint shop, which was on a busy street beside the state fair grounds. When it was time to pick it up, I decided to drive it home "as is"..no tags, no bumpers, no lights no windshield no door handles. It was fair time and the road past the grounds was packed with cars and people. I drove it past 4 cops on cross guard duty who never batted an eye, just get this traffic moving......

i can't help but wonder what would have happened if they had a body in the back seat and no probable cause!

When my 62 was registered in Pennsylvania and only required a rear tag, I had a 1962 Wisconsin tag on the front, my home state. I checked with the Pennsylvania state police and was told I could put whatever I wanted on the front. When I drove the car to Wisconsin, I promptly got pulled over by the Wisconsin State patrol. The officer looked at both plates and asked where I was from, I told him, Pennsylvania. He ask about the Wisconsin plate and I told him that Pennsylvania didn't require a front plate so I was using an old Wis. plate. He said, " is that legal," I told him it was in Pa. so he said, " I guess if it's ok for them, it's ok for me. have a good day. Never even said, Nice Car.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve slapped a tag on a car I just bought and driven it home. I DO make sure that 1) I have a follow vehicle 2) I obey all traffic laws 3) THE CAR IS INSURED.

Never got a ticket about a plate on one of my cars, but did receive a terse letter from the state informing me that my license plate did not meet the standards of decency and they would not renew it.
Also back in the day I got a ticket for no license plate light and you know what Milner said about that kind of ticket? File it under C.
