Whats with the extra characters on this VIN tag?
Im looking at this tag and Im not sure whats up with the extra 3 characters “stamped” after the VIN. (“043”). Almost looks printed in the photo. VIN blocked out per privacy.
Any ideas?

Looks like 0 stamped over the first digit of 443. No clue what that is for.

I don't know much about the 63/64s so this is a guess but kinda recall that the receiving dealers sometimes stamped when the car arrived at their dealership. The few times I've seen those stamped numbers, they were usually above the VIN but no rhyme or reason as to where they stamped them.

I think the delivery date guess is a good one. While it could be April 63, it could also be consistent with April, 3rd week.
Thanks guys!

I agree with the delivery date , just stamped in the wrong location. It should have been on the trim tag.

I thought the memo for dealers to stamp the vin tag started in 65 about the same time as DD was stamped on the tag.

There were a series of Chevrolet Service Bulletins on this subject... mainly because the dealerships were complaining there wasn't enough/proper room on the VIN plate, to stamp the required Delivery Date. Here's one bulletin explaining the upcoming change to the VIN tag (adding the "DD" section - with superimposed sketch from the 2nd page). The date format was discussed in other bulletins... it indicated the stamping sequence was MONTH and YEAR.

I also recall a service bulletin that mentioned that sometimes stamping of the delivery date on the VIN tag caused the spot welds to break loose. The bulletin advised the dealers to drill and pop rivet the tags back in place if this occurred.
I have seen known original examples of 63-64 VIN tags that have one spot weld and one rivet holding the VIN tag in place. I have also seen vehicles with two rivets holding the VIN tag in place when both spot welds came loose.

I don't think that the dealers gave this very much attention. They actually stamped it on my Trim Tag not the Vin.. My NCRS delivery report it says the car was delivered on March 13. If you zoom in it looks like it was actually stamped upside down and the date looks like 2 9 and maybe a 3.
