Changing a Muncie plastic speedo gear
My C2 is 10 mph slow on the speedo and I need to change the plastic gear. I bought the correct one and now would like some advice on what if anything I have to remove to get to the drive. I can see it ok under the car and the small bolt holding the gear in place is removable but is there enough room to pull the old gear out and insert the new one without removing anything else?

Once you remove the retainer bolt and the small retainer that the bolt holds in place, the gear and the cable adapter should pull straight out. Yours may be more or less difficult to pull depending on how long it's been since the thing was pulled the last time - in many cases the answer is never, so you may have 50 odd years of crud and a dried out o-ring seal to deal with. There is room, however.

Remove (unscrew) the speedo cable first, and pull it out of the adapter. Then remove the adapter bolt & retainer..
While removing the adapter, make sure the speedo driven gear is coming out with it.
A few of us have pulled the adapter out, and seen the gear fall back into the trans..
If that happens, some say it is OK to leave it in the trans, but others (like me) have pulled the trans and removed the old gear.
Good luck,

Can't you just loosen the retainer bolt and rotate the retainer out of the way, rather than totally removing it?

On R66, you can leave the bolt and retainer bar in place and loosen it enough to rotate it and the bullet (gear adapter) a little to disengage it from the slot.
I use a brake tool or bent paint can opener to put in the slot in the bullet to get it moving, however, don't pop it out too quickly or you may loose the old gear.
I put a new internal seal and external O-ring on the bullet for a couple of dollars. Some bullets don't have the internal seal.
When reinstalling the bullet with the new gear, align the slot with the bolt and retainer bar as you install it. Of course you may have to twist it once in.to align the slot and bar.
