If you don't have firearm solvent on hand, and the gunk appears to be carbon-based, consider trying a soak in brake fluid. Clean it up well to remove any fluid residue before reassembling. Burning DOT3 will generate some nasty smoke.
I have got the choke piston sliding nicely in the bore, reassembled and installed. 👍🏻
However....
The car starts with choke closed and on high idle. When I try to kick it down to warm idle it doesn’t. I have attached some pictures of my linkage. Can someone tell me if everything looks right or if there might be an adjustment required?

I wasn’t sure if this should be a new thread The circled part (fast idle cam?) does not kick down after warming up. I can manually pull the throttle lever and disengage it, but as soon as I accelerate, it sticks again. This (lockout dog?) does not seem to do anything. It is loosey goosey without engaging anything. Is this normal?
In your photo with the yellow circle, the fast idle screw is all the way off the cam. If it's still idling fast, maybe your slow idle is set too high. If, on the other hand, the screw is not normally dropping the fast idle cam, try rotating the choke more toward lean. Also check your piston movement from time to time. As I said earlier, mine would still sometimes bind after warmup until I sanded it a little.

The circled picture is when I manually pull the throttle cable and move the cam to drop the idle down to normal. It will not move to low idle by “kicking it down”.
Once I manually get it on low idle, as soon as I press on the accelerator it sticks back on fast idle (Green arrow).
I still don’t know what the other cam does (Yellow arrow).
I hope I’m explaining this correctly.

This is when I manually move it off fast idle. It will not kick down on it’s own after warming up. Green arrow: After warming up, as soon as I press the accelerator it sticks back on high idle. Yellow arrow: This cam doesn’t seem to do anything. It just flops around (??)
The farther that adjustment is run in (clockwise), the faster your fast idle will be at all positions on the cam. I would adjust the choke to be fully off as the car warms up, and then adjust the fast idle where I wanted it to be on a cold start.
The choke piston is now moving freely.
I adjusted the choke a little leaner and everything seems to be working great now👍🏻
I took the car for a quick trip around the neighborhood and everything seems to operate correctly and the car is running really good!
