Original Alternator Markings - Way to tell?
Hi, I am looking at an early 693 37A alt for my early 65. I am sure the components have been changed out over the years but anyway to tell of it is original correct case vs re-stamp case?
Note, in addition to the date code, there is a small marking next to the bold hole on the front fan side. What is this?
Thanks, in advance....

L76_Cpar,
I just checked my 65 696 alternator. It has a number 5 in that same front spot. No letter. No idea here on its significance. It's an older Pirkle restored piece.

That's a right nice looking alternator you're checking on.

I cant comment on the stamp/restamp status.
Regardless, I still think it looks like a nice piece.

the date code format is YMDD so if the date is in the right window for your car it looks correct. If your car is a 300 hp SB w/o a/c it would be the 37 amp alt shown

2021 C2 of the Year Finalist - Unmodified
I just picked up my original '66 alternator and starter from a rebuilder today. It's a one owner car and the alternator had never been apart until now. The car is an April 25, 1966 build, 427/390 with no power options (except the am/fm radio and p/antenna). The 37 amp alternator date stamp is "6D12" or April 12, 1966.
I never noticed that number or letter by the bolt hole until you mentioned it. It's "D3" which makes sense on my car, since the "D" is April. But I don't know what the 3 means. Unless the case was manufactured on April 3, 1966 and the assembled date is the large stamp on top, April 12, 1966.
So when you're seeing a single number "5 "or a "C2" with a date code of "M16", 1964 on top, that stumps me. I'd have to check my NCRS judging manual and see if that's in there.
37 amp alternator date coded April 12, 1966.
Date code near alternator bolt hole "D3" - April 3rd?, 1966

Mine's date code stamp is 4G31 (31 July 64), so way early for the car but way better than the one I had, which coded out to a 1971 Firebird or GTO with rear window defogger. Nice piece, but just wrong...

Ken,
Thanks for the post and the image. Your 66 unit looks nice.
I have a Delco unit from the 80's ??? with no markings what so ever. It would be easy to re-stamp is someone cared enough to go through the effort.
It appears that starting in early 65, they changed the "6" in the 1100693 part of the stamp. As you can see on yours, the top right edge of the six does not come all the way over; so a bit harder to reproduce (not the case in 63-64). Also, in addition to the D3 marking, yours has the "Delco Remmey" logo to the right of the D3.
From what I could find so far, I don't think these "fan side" markings matter from a judging standpoint (could be wrong). If I am going through all the time, cost, and effort, though, I would like to get it right.
Thanks, again, for your post and images!!!
