Hey all!
poking around the country looking at cars that meet the above criteria. Is there a forum on which posted ads are discussed? Good bad, avoid like the plague, wire them money?

You will find ALL you need right here; the very best Corvette forum on the planet. Check the midyears classifieds section and find/execute the search function for a long history of information and previous questions asked. Good luck.

This is it. Best one around. There is also a for sale forum. This forum helped me in finding a car and I would guess many others guys were helped.

Steve - Welcome to the Corvette Forum. It would help if you could narrow down the particulars of what you are looking for in a 65/66 Bigblock such as Coupe or Roadster, does it have to have it's original engine, does it need to have background documentation, what colors do you prefer, what options are you looking for? I bought a 65 Non-Original-Motor 396 Maroon Roadster a year ago. At the time, I had run across '5' 65 396 Corvettes, even had one for sale just '4' miles from where I live but decided on the Roadster I bought in Portland Oregon due to color combination and options. Good luck in your search and keep us posted on your progress.

There are even people on here who are well qualified to do pre-purchase inspections for you on distant cars or if you do not feel experienced enough to evaluate a car for sale.

Keep a watch on Bring A Trailer for C2 sales also. There's almost always one on there and since the Corvette's on that auction site usually don't sell really high, you might find a decent price. Definitely go look, or have someone look any car over very well! Where are your located? Congrats on the C2 search and have fun!

Welcome Steve. I came here looking for the same thing about 6 years ago. My first requirement was to make sure I was buying a real BB car. Use Advanced search to research the components and tell tales of BB cars. There are many threads listing the rear stabs, differential codes, universal yokes.... many more. I wasn’t stuck on having an original engine car. I found what I wanted at a fair price and an extensive inspection. BUT still I missed some serious flaws. My price range was on the low end back then at $65-70k for a BB car. I hunted and learned for about a year before finding my car. Enjoy the hunt, get educated, and be patient. Cheers

And provette67 has proven himself to be one of the best. But beware, big block 65 -67 vettes are one of the most faked, mis-represented, expensive and riskiest purchases out there.

Do your homework Steve. As Dan stated the '65 - '67 BB cars are often faked. This forum has many very knowledgeable people who are willing to help.
As an owner I can add a bit of info on the '65 BB (L78 option) cars. They are the most rare of the BB cars for a few reasons. The '65 was the first year the BB was offered in a Corvette and the only year they used the 396 engine. Introduced half way through the production run only 2,157 were produced. It's more difficult to fake a '65 due to the fact there were so few produced the unique parts are hard to find. If you consider buying a L78 car make sure the VIN is over 13,000 (I'm not exactly sure the VIN of the first L78 produced).

I will be selling my 65 L78 soon, sometime in the next few months I have -zero interest in it. It needs some work and by today's standards, needs a complete restoration. Currently runs , needs calipers and throw out bearing making noise. I've owned it 17 years and it's moved one maybe two times in the last 4-5 years. When I figure out my happy price , don't want to sell it price, don't need money price etc i will post it in the for sale sale section.

Without knowing exactly what you want, a practical answer is look for one that is advertised by the seller as "not original motor." Still leaves open the question of whether the car was in fact originally a BB, but the big money fraud issue is already addressed. The fraud price of a NOM big block is a whole lot smaller than the fraud price of a fake "born with" motor. This forum even made its own term, "born wirh" to distinguish a specific subset of originality fraud. Choose not to deal with that and you'll risk less money.

Welcome to the Forum.....just a thought you might want to keep an open mind and not disregard the small blocks out there....a car with interesting history, documentation and exceptional condition can come in both "large or extra large!"
