Of course, real men don't need jack stands - they work on their cars suspended from jacks alone. Sadly, I have known some guys for who this technique didn't work out very well - or their widows for that matter. But that's different thread.

I should add that since I bought a Quickjack 3500 that stores right under my 67 I never use jack stands anymore but still keep them around.

I have seen some pin in post stands that have really thin sheet metal legs and tie bars, I wouldn't trust some of those much, either, for a different reason..

I always liked big wood blocks as safety fallbacks, even when using jackstands.. I have some 8" x8" x12" long blocks that get put under the frame on both sides if i am doing something that isn't on the lift.

I have two of these. I originally bought four but they made me nervous so I returned two. Great price. I kept two because of their compact size. I only use them on one side of the car for tire changes and don’t go under the car. Don’t think it will be worth the time to drive 30 minutes to HF. These things will collapse at the drop of a hat when they don’t have a load on them. One bit me on the hand while I was carrying it. Trying to swear off Chinese ****.

Your'e absolutely correct - easier said than done. In many examples, we've sold our greedy souls to the point that are no longer any US-made equivalents. While we demand cheap goods (by shopping for price only, not value or quality) while demanding more income and benefits, we ensure the continued exporting of goods and services production off-shore. Then we complain about the results.
Example: We blame the airlines for the tiny coach class seats even while we overeat and continue to get fatter as a population, and when we go shopping for plane tickets our top criteria, sometimes our only criteria, is price and then complain that we can't fit in them due to airline greed. Heck, we told the airlines what we value most of all, cost, and it's not comfort, then we blame the airlines for being greedy. Well, we need to look in the mirror.
But you also bring up a great question about where were they made. I'll be checking. They're probably over 30 years old or older, so hopefully I'll get lucky and they're made in the USA.

I've got at least four of these stands. Awesome. Another pair of old craftsman, and another pair of something...they're about 10 years older than this recall window, though.

Burning Brakes
I use Harbor Freight but are selective on the things I buy there. HF may not be the place to buy precision tooling but that varies depending on what your looking for. I did buy a dial indicator set which seems to be pretty accurate for run-outs. They do have some low end torque wrenches but also some higher quality ones also. I have one of their low end cheap-o torque 3/8' t-wrench which I compared to a aircraft quality one I also have. It comes in close, but also is not consistent to a quality one. One thing I've noticed is that tools made in Taiwan are of better quality than those made in China for what its worth. I bought a Porter Cable mitre saw last year from one of the bigh box stores. It was made in China. Used it 3x for light work and it wouldn't shut off and the motor started smoking. Luckily, they honored the warranty so I upgraded to a De Walt. Its made in Taiwan, or at least the motor is. Been running great so far. Just what I've noticed in tooling. Now I do try to go out of my way to buy products made in the USA when I can find them. Hopefully the trend to bring manufacturing back in some of these areas will be coming back. I hope.

It takes dedicated effort to cheapen metal and to be so sloppy in casting as to screw up something as simple as a jack stand. I'm concerned about all those computer parts that we have received over the years that may contain a hidden command code allowing them to be turned off by the push of a button at some remote location. If you think Covid-19 is taxing, imagine our lives without electricity.

So I see that HF has marked the jacks down to 19.95 a pair. Clearance price it says. Not worth it to make a trip there. How much credit did you get?

Well...the pin in post kind that look like exhaust tubing have a bad habit of folding over and many of them were recalled about 20 years ago.

A friend of my refers to that outfit as Harbor Fright. We have screwed ourselves (and are now literally getting killed) by buying Chinajunk….whether it's from a failed jackstand or Wuhan flu.

I have a friend who calls it Chinese Freight. Horrible Freight is another one.
But, I shop there for some stuff.
I never go under a car supported only by jack stands so that’s not an issue for me. I’ve read and heard too many grizzly stories about jack stand accidents. One was a fellow forum member several years ago.
