How to keep heater hose connections from rusting
The tee going into my reservoir is rusted. Also, I am getting a cutoff valve for my heater hose. I want to keep both from rusting. Will it work if I paint them with clear paint?

Had my car (63) since 89 and this was what was used for the tee fitting-brass. (not much of a bite for the hose-but lasted 30yrs and more years). I put an original back on-it will last years.

Ace Hardware, Menards, Lowes, etc. carry brass ball valves - 1/2" FNPT. Buy a brass 1/2" close pipe nipple to screw into the intake manifold, add the valve, put you hose fitting in the end of the valve. All for about $10 and much better than the sheet metal crap valves sold for the application. Before you install it, consider the handle operation and paint it if you chose.
While you are there, look for 1/2" copper and brass tees for your expansion tank. You can get hose barb fittings there too. You don't have to buy things from FLAPS to fit the function.

I don't understand the infatuation with using a home plumbing valve on our cars for heater cutoff when the automotive industry makes a nice part. I have used one of these valves for over 10 years with no leaks and it works great. I used to use a floor vent cable, so the inside **** and bracket looked factory, to operate it remotely in the 65. After the reassembly after my accident I haven't got around to hooking up the cable yet. I just turn the lever on the valve.

Here's one for less money yet and it's not quite so eye catching.

I'm a pretty thrifty guy. Price check everything and my car is far from original. But for the extra 20 bucks I'll use the part that was designed for the application.
