Carlisle 2019

My son & I took the '58 to Carlisle for its first visit. It felt weird on Thursday to not have a parts list with us. On Friday, after the rain, we walked around and took in the fantastic cars and views. On Saturday we sat and answered a lot of good questions about the car. We also drove in the parade for the first time. The icing on the cake was winning a Celebrity Choice Award. At my age, most things don't excite me any more. I felt like an eighteen year old with a beautiful girl talking to me. it was great. I don't really care how the winners are picked. All I know was that it was a great weekend

A gentle correction to Gessner's excellent recital on the PPE in post #60 - for the Milwaukee - Thompson NY Double National race points weekend, Kaplan/Jeffords KNEW what the field would be in Milwaukee and also KNEW that most of the "hot shoes" (Nat'l point contenders) would be at NY, simply due to location. The "B" car - the "imitator" was painted and changed to look like the PPE, but without some of the "massaging" that the PPE had received. The regular PPE was shipped to NY. At the 2000 Palm Springs Installation of JJ into the Hall of Fame, Ronnie told me that JJ had "one of his very best drives" in winning Milwaukee with a virtually stock car and that during the teardown, some of the competitors were actually embarrassed by how stock the car was. "The teardown was like a blank check to do whatever we wanted" for the rest of the year, but they had already done it all.

MARK C, The 1957 CORVETTE BLACK Race car owned by FRANK BUCK. Here is some history on that car.
This 1957 Corvette was delivered to Bob Mouat, who was one of the early
members of the Washington Corvette Club along with Zora Duntov, in
Baltimore Maryland. This Corvette was one of 43 Corvettes with the RPO
579E (airbox) option and RPO 684 (big brake) option. Only 43 airbox cars
were produced with only about 25 are known to survive. This car is also equipped
with rare factory traction bars.
From delivery until 1964, Bob Mouat raced the Corvette, primarily in SCCA
National events throughout the Northeast. Records show he raced at
Lime Rock, Bridgehampton, VIR, as well as tracks that no longer
exist such as Cumberland, Marlboro and Thompson. While most other
racers were trading up to newer models, Bob continued to race his 57.
Complete records have now been compiled and document 83 SCCA RACE
events with 55 Podiumn finishes of 1st, 2nd or 3rd place.
This may be one of most extensively raced Corvettes from the period. In
SCCA points, Bob ranked as high as 2nd in B/P in 1963 and 3rd in B/P in
1964. Although the car originally ran close to stock, as racecars go, there were
ongoing upgrade SCCA legal changes to the car. Just to note a few, racing stripes were added,
The windshield was cut down, bumpers removed, gauges added and ultimately the car was painted
red in 1964. Bob adapted a pressure gauge from something else for oil
pressure and added wood blocks to the pedals to adjust for his height.
Additional padding was added to the drivers seat to create a bolster.
After 1964, the next owner drove the car on the street for a few years
and then retired the car to his garage near the ocean where it sat and
unfortunately decomposed until
Sean, Kevin & Kent Hussey, Birmingham AL purchased the car in 2004.
For the restoration, they decided to return the car to the configuration that
it ran in the early 60’s as depicted in the picture from the GM Archives.
The vintage pictures were used as the restoration by Legendary Motorcar in Canada who restored the car.
The car was sold to FRANK BUCK in Gettysburg Pennsylvania in 2014

In addition to the great history of this car, after Frank bought the black cold airbox car, he raced it in the Historic Hershey
Hillclimb. The car performed flawlessly and was very competitive with the rest of the race cars.

I was in the car corral pavilion all day Friday and Saturday baby sitting my car. I ventured out into the swap meet on Saturday afternoon to find a few things that I needed. Although the majority of the swap vendors were already packing up or gone, I was happy to find everything that I needed, and got them all for much less than I thought. So I suppose there is a silver lining for those that wait til Saturday afternoon to hunt!! :-)
