Default What are hard tops going for

I found locally, a hardtop for m,y '64. It has no headliner or weatherstrip. It looks like all the chrome and hardware is there--needs paint. How much should I pay for it?

before you do anything look in the parts for sale section here, I'm sure I saw 2 that were reasonable priced. depending on condition the prices are all over the place, and unless your lucky enough to find one in your color there will be added cost for repainting.

that's a good price, but you still need weather stripping and a headliner, this one here is black inside and looks excellent, I have no affiliation to it, seems like a very nice top for the price, if you have access to a paint shop, new weather stripping and headliner, you may be right at or a bit over the 950 asking price for the one here. Just make sure the latches are in good shape and it has all the hardware for where it attatcehs to the rear deck, it starts to get pricy when you nickel and dime pieces.

You should be able to buy it for $500. These things are hard to sell because of shipping. A local buyer with 5 Benjamins in hand will probably walk away with it, and it would be well bought. But, you will spend more than that on weatherstrip, headliner and paint.

Another quick note--I just dug into mine (first time for everything)--and let me tell you, there is a reason Glassworks charges what it does to fix them. The SCREW KIT was 23 pieces just for the 15 pieces of molding. We stripped, filled, sanded, primed, sanded, painted, cleared these 15 molding pieces. Pint of paint down here is 87.00 and the work was worth 500.00 just in time and materials. New headliner is over 100.00, and wait until you want the clips for the front weatherstrip. You need 13; they are 5.00 each or 60.00 as a set. That is just the clips, and there are LOTS of different "clips" on the hardtop.

This thing has hundreds of parts. As with the convertible top, there are lots of expensive latches, etc. you can buy if you need them.

Be sure to look closely when you are buying as there are several places for rust (under the weatherstrips) and other gremlins.

Luckily, we were able to save several parts, but Glassworks has parts available if you need them.

Finally, it is not a picnic to take apart and re-assemble, so pay what you can to get the best one you can find. They ain't easy to deal with...but they look totally spiff on the car!

Cheers,

Richard

I don't use this one and never will. Shipping cost would be high.

Ain’t that the truth! I’m finishing two at a time right now. It’s taking me forever with so many parts.

I was totally amazed, but then, it was the 1960's, so...the more parts the merrier, I guess! Kept all those small vendors in business back then.

Today, they would stamp it out of one piece of cheap plastic, throw a latch on it, and that would be it!

I would say it is the most complex single part on the car just based on number of parts and how finicky they are to put back together. Must have been a hoot on the side assembly line where they made them back then...I bet they had a few choice words for the engineers who spec'd them out!

Best of luck--they ARE cool looking, however, so...

Cheers,

Richard

I tend to agree with, buy the one that needs the least amount of work. There are many parts as previously mentioned. If you decide to by one at a low price and restore it, be aware that the current replacement rubber is thicker and more difficult to deal with. I rebuilt the top that was original to my 63. I ended up not using most of the reproduction rubber and using NOS rubber that I could find. Also, removing dents and polishing the stainless is also time consuming. Expensive if you send it out.

The 64-67 hardtop is the same except you could get vinyl on the 67. There were 3 different tops in 63.
