Default "retro" side pipe mock-up

I am trying to have some side pipes made up that will look a little retro but still go with the '67 restomod. I started some discussion in another thread regarding the L88 side pipes and or those with the traditional "Hooker" side pipe look. I like both, but want to do something a little different. Started the early "envisioning" today, for a few minutes after work. Here are a couple pictures. I will add more to this as we go along...looks very simplistic now, but when the pipe is cut to length and the "cone" and front tube are welded...then stainless brushed with the LS Headers, I believe it will look right. For the side pipe we are using a 3 1/2 inch tube. It will be raked down and out a little little in the end. My pictures probably don't do it justice, but you will probably get the picture... Like I said, I will post all on this thread for any who might be interested.

For a resto-mod with a vintage look, I really like what The Roadstershop did with these side pipes

Those looks great. Thinking of doing the same on my car. Any under car pic and specs on pipe size and muffler?

Just my opinion, of course, but I think the "look" would be better if you use 3" tubing instead of 3-1/2". 3-1/2" starts to look a little "bulky", for lack of a better term.

I thought the same thing. Plus I would rotate the outlet down another 15-30 degrees, but like Jim said, that's only my opinion.

But that car looks nice.

FlyNavy,
I had seen some small pictures of that Roadster Shop car, but none with the clarity you provided. That is the direction we will be going. Excepts ad 2 3/4 pipe will be coming from under the car. It will turn parallel with the side trim for 2 inches the go into the 6" long cone that takes it from 2 3/4 to 3 1/2. Then it will be all brushed...but might coat it bright silver not sure. Thanks for those pictures.

Jim,
Is 3" the size on the Grand Sport in your profile picture? I too thought 3 1/2 might be a little big, but those Hooker/Dougs types they are 4"...and Dr. L88 told me the one's he has are 4"...and his car's pipe look really good to me. I have 3" pipe and put it up to the car...its seemed good, but then the 3 1/2 looks good and is only a small difference in relative diameter. Also, the fellow doing the exhaust will be putting some baffling inside for noise reduction so this is another reason the 3 1/2 seems good. Once we get the under body turn out and the short cone on it and cut the big pipe down, we'll tack it and I will add some more pictures. Thanks for your perspective.

Yes, we will be looking at the right (from my perspective of course) turn-out/down. I also believe I will move the pipes down slightly for a "rake". So then it would be about 1/2 off the molding in front and 3/4 in the rear....also will have slight rake out too....next week I should have better pictures.

Good eye! Yes, the side exhaust on my Grand Sport uses 3" pipes and inside there are spiral inserts from Spiral Turbo Specialties to meet sound limits at some tracks.

My bride's Grand Sport track car came to us with 4" pipes. I never like them. They looked cartoonish to my eye. BUT.... the spiral inserts in those pipes were sufficiently effective that we drove it on the street without any problems.

pretty cool

here’s what the pipes sound like http://gmauthority.com/blog/2017/05/...52-rwhp-video/

Those look to be for real knock offs too.

Glad those helped....if you go to the Roadstershop web site, they have the full build photos. The exhaust on this particular car is very cool as it runs open side pipes as well as a full under car exhaust with mufflers. There are electronic cut outs that when closed, force the exhaust through the full system but when open, allow it to flow through the open side pipes.

I Really Wanted Side Exhaust !

But wrestled with a side pipes decision for a long time on this SRIII build ....
THE Pro's ...
1.Looks
2.Access to trans & drive-line components .

Con's
1. Loud Limited Muffler or size restriction
2. Loss of power (under car exhaust always makes more HP (look it up )
3. Women don't dig burning their legs.......nor do I . I "Never" heard the end of it on my last car !
4. It's hard to Y pipe or turbo the car .... possable H pipe .
5 Ground Clearance . Smashed pipes don't flow well. Ask me how I know .
6 .SRIII ... frame probably not as stiff ( twist Flex ) when modified for Side exhaust

Your Ideas were the same as mine at the time ...to Fabricate Pipes (with heat shields) But Practicality won out . Yours Looking good though ...........and Good-luck ..... G

Stingx,
Since I have the SRIII frame with C6 components, and ZL1 rear, it would be hard to run regular exhaust....but, I do like side exhaust....the fellow building my exhause (Fory Haines, maybe you've heard of him) says he can put baffling in that will significantly muffle the sound....we'll see. Also, my intent is to have the side pipes no lower than the bottom of the frame rail (rockers)...we'll see....and I only have one women to worry about and she's ok.....until, of course, the first burn...

My Convertible has SRIII C6 suspension as well with B&J Quick change. Clearance is tight! .... but I decided on one 3X3 SS magnaflow X flow muffler in the frame "Arch way" and out the back. At least the sound will be way behind me and not in my left ear!

Muffler =
https://www.rgsperformance.com/produ...mufflerx-pipe/
They May regret the lifetime warranty!

Below is a example C4 suspension that hangs lower .... you get the Idea ........................
Ill needs access to the Quick Change gears so the muffler will be in front of the diff & tail pipes will be different .......
