62 FI tachometer cable supplier
Does anyone have a source for a 62 FI tach CABLE, not the housing and cable. I want to use my original housing but would like a new internal cable. None of the usual suppliers sell the cable alone. The 62 has a square end on both the distributor and the tach display, unlike the 61 and older FI tach cables that have a tang drive at the distributor.

Jerry,
If you can't locate a source of just the inner cable, you might be able to find an inexpensive short cable and casing through NAPA. You'd use the cable and discard the casing. I know for sure NAPA carries speedometer cable assemblies; I've bought a few, one of which was approximately the length of a tach cable.
Good luck,
Jim

Length can vary from maker to maker and a simple swap will probably not work. You need to go to a place to have one made so that the correct ends for the casing are used and the length is correct

I know this is an older thread but I just found it.
Is it possible to pull the old cable core out from the generator end?
If so, can you slide the new core cable up through the housing from the generator end?
Does it make any sense to try to lubricate the existing cable? The one on my ‘61 has started to get noisy. I have the base 230 hp motor so the tach drive is on the generator. I’d like to avoid disassembling instrument cluster to get to the tach cable, if possible. Been there when I restored the interior. Should have replaced cables then…DOH!

UPDATE: Had a great conversation with Bill Pilon about pulling / replacing the tach cable core. Has to be pulled from the tach end but access is not too bad. Removed 3 screws, 2 bolts, 2 brackets and the tach light.
Not as hard as I thought. Got the old cable core out, expect to install the new one in a day or two.
Thanks, Bill!

Got the new cable in. Works fine. Used some silicone grease for lubricant. Much quieter. Decided to replace gauge cluster bulbs with LEDs while I have some pieces out of the way. Got some nifty new double jointed needle nose pliers that should help:
