Default 1966 hood shortage

I am looking at a 1966 Corvette that has a 67 stinger type hood on it. The fellow selling the car believes that in late 66 there was a shortage of small block hoods and he says the hood on the car is an original hood.to the car....IS there any possible truth to this story.

The hood myth usually involves a ‘67 but it’s still a myth.

Every owner with the wrong hood references this BS story. When you straighten them out. The answer is usuallly, .”.....you weren’t there; anything could happen at the factory back then!”

The big block hood in 66 was not the stinger type hood.

Let me get this straight. GM ran out of 1966 hoods, so they went to their stockpile of future/not produced 1967 hoods and installed them on the 1966 Corvette. The movie Back to the Future didn't come out until 1985.

This rumor is thought to have been initially repeated in a Nolan book, which initially lent some credibility to it, but has been repeatedly disproven by better authority (JohnZ).

Further, as stated above, it makes even less sense for a '66 to wind up with a '67 hood.

This horse has been beaten into horse soup.

Sorry, didn't happen.

I love these stories of legend!

I know a guy who had a ‘66 coupe with an LS1 from the factory. I asked him if he was sure it wasn’t an LS3. He looked at me like I was some kind of idiot and said, “Of course it’s an LS1, everyone knows the LS3 wasn’t out in 1966.”

These stories make life rich!

These BS stories are attached to every make and performance car if you dig deep enough. Steel bodied Corvettes. 421 Powered GTOs. Hemi Valiants....and on and on........

Clearly this story is false. But my 1983 steel-bodied Corvette with the experimental Pontiac turbo engine is real.

What do you mean? My '66 coupe has a '67 big block hood! (OK, it's actually a '65 hood that someone grafted a '67-style scoop onto, and the '66 small-block hood is in the rafters of the garage....)

Actually I think there was a 421 GTO that was set up as a ringer for a magazine test car, I remember reading about it once in a muscle car magazine. I think it was in 64 as I remember. As for the Corvette hood thing, highly unlikely!

OK, the ‘67 big block hood story is pretty played out, but someone making the argument that a ‘67 big block hood was used in 1966 when they were short on hoods is simply a new level.

I have to add this to my ‘67 big block hood story threads with an asterisk.

Royal Pontiac in Detroit Michigan...............creator of the "Bobcat Package".

Likely reported by Marty Schor in HI-PERFORMANCE CARS magazine. JohnZ may have even been there to see the car.

Royal Pontiac was actually in Royal Oak, (Main St. north of 11 Mile) which is a northern suburb of Detroit.: cheers:

Captain,
You came to the right place for the answer to your question. Don't necessarily give up on the car but make sure you check it thoroughly and the best thing is to have a knowledgable Corvette person inspect it. Most times there is a modest fee for that service but well worth the money.

I think the only one i have NOT heard (YET) is the 57 Corvette with the 67 hood scoop from the factory.

Lets see...Chevrolet accidentally lost a 1957 Corvette in the assembly plant. The car was build in late 1957, and almost ready to sell when it had a small problem with the engine. Chevy pushed the car to the heavy work area and it got moved around, eventually ending up getting stored in an out building.

The car sat there for about a decade. One day a worker was looking for some misplaced parts, and he opened the old out building and rediscovered the new old stock 1957 Corvette.

The plant managers debated what to do with it. Finally they decided to install a 1967 big block hood scoop on the car and then sell it to an employee. So they build a one off 1957/67 hood on the car and out the door it went.

And that is the story, I am sticking to it.
