Default Got my temp gauge reading more accurate.

1965 Vert with 350 SB. Been fooling around the last few weeks trying to get dash temperature gauge to more accurately reflect the engine temp. As you can see in one pic the gauge reading almost to the yellow mark while the temp gun read 187-188 degrees. I tried two different sending units (one from Napa and one from AZ) and they both read about 210 on the gauge but also about 10 miles into the drive the gauge would tick up way high to yellow. I also added a mechanical gauge under the hood just for a little peace of mind.

Last week I ordered a TS-6 sending unit just to try it out and what a difference it has made. Both the dash gauge and mechanical gauge are reading more closer than I have seen. Have much more comfort now that I can now rely more on the dash gauge.

And yes I know that is the wrong gauge for a '65. Will change it out next fall when I pull the dash for other updates.

Just thought I would post this in case it might help someone else dealing with an inaccurate gauge.

With the two sending units

Mechanical gauge reading more accurate

Temp gun matches the mechanical gauge

Now the dash gauge better matches the mech gauge and temp gun. This is with the TS-6 sending unit.

This resistor is also available from Corvette Central to accomplish a more accurate reading of the Temperature gauge...It is specifically designed to adjust gauges that show a higher reading than the actual engine temperature...

I’ve got the same problem on my C1. Most of the time it says 180, but with the AC on on a hot day, gauge pegs at 220 but gun says 200. As 20round asked, what is a ts-6?

It is a Standard (Brand) temp sending unit that is marked TS-6. Figured it was worth a shot and bought one.

Here is another

have asked this before never got reply is there a diff between the sensors that use a guage and the ones that use the idiot light, if so how can you tell the diff

PB....

Sorry but I don't have a clue on that question. I am sure someone might chime in. This was going to be my last attempt in getting my gauge close to accurate before I added the adjustable resistor.

The idiot light sender is not a sender but a bi-metallic switch that supplies a ground on the terminal at a pre-determined water temperature. A sender used with an indicator or gauge is a varister or variable resister that changes its resistance with temperature. Using a DVM set to ohms the unit used with an idiot light will show infinite resistance (open circuit) when cold, the varister will show continuity (closed circuit) but with resistance measured in ohms.

I use a TU-5 Duralast, any possibility that's what you have?

Probably. I run the same, it puts the needle at 160 when actual temp is 180, seems as good as I can get it.

I have tried just about everything to correct the problem I have with my coolant temperature reading low. After the engine completely warmed the max the gauge would indicate
would be around 130 degree. I have tried numerous TU-5 with the same results. I decided to try the TS-6 and it has helped. I now have a reading of 170 degrees. I know it should
be indicating around 190/200 degrees but for now I am happy with the results.

Is that TS-6 stamped on the unit. Mine is working pretty good but not sure what it is.

Yes. TS 6 is stamped on the one I bought.
The one I bought was sold to me as new old stock. And it looked to be old with the brass turned darker. Not shiny.

The ST-6 (Standard Motor Parts) and the TU-5 (AutoZone) are made by different manufacturers to replace the original GM #1513321, and both are reasonably accurate; I had an ST-6 in my '67, and it calibrated exactly with my I.R. gun.

Do mean TS-6 instead of ST-6

My sender was in a box marked TS 6 and it was also stamped on the body of the sender.
I am not sure about a ST 6.

I do know that the TU 5 I bought made the gauge read way high. Possibly Auto Zone gave me one that was boxed in error. Who knows.

I am am just happy that my gauge problem seems to be over for now.

Wolfman,

I'm going to try the resistor....My gauge runs 25-30 degrees high. Shooting with a heat gun at my sensor and top rad hose reads 174/178 degrees.
I will post results....
