Who sells 3rd members for my 62
I'm looking to do a 3rd member swap on my 62, it has a 4:10 gear. I'm looking for a 3:55 or smaller complete 3rd member ready to bolt in. Would like to find the guy that loves these rears, and might have something available. Also would appreciate any first hand knowledge in reference to what other 3rd members will work for my stock 62 i.e. 55-64 Chevy ... would like to keep it posi, and saw a post from DZAUTO on the features of the posi vs. open carrier ... What would be my chances of finding one be in Carlisle this weekend? LOL

I would look at some of the Chevy Forums and post a request. Remember, these third members existed in '55-'64 Chevrolets, which is a LOT of cars produced vis a vis the Corvette. Just remember, in 1957 ALONE, there were over 1.35 million full size Chevrolets produced. Again, 1957 ALONE. That is a lot of third members. Doing a search on this Forum is, probably, somewhat limited. Expand your search.

Yea, this is the Carlisle GM Weekend. Just wanted to make sure the 55-64 stuff would inner change, and was thinking maybe I could find one .. just don't say it's for a Corvette right ... then the price goes up

I believe the carrier assembly is the same as '62-'63 Chevy II as well except the Chevy II uses smaller studs to hold it to the banjo housing. You could re-drill the holes to size. Should be cheaper yet.

Yeah! I bought the re-build kit and new ring and pinion for 55-63 chevy pumkin and the only thing that was right was the clutches and gasket. Turned out it's a 62 chevy II pumkin posie. I can get bearings for it but no ring and pinion. It's a 308, and the 370's I bought won't work. Chip

Do not buy a third member from:
55-56 Chevy
56 Corvette
62-63 Chevy II
DO NOT DO IT!
The 55-6 pass car and 56 Vette third members are the same. ALL aspects of those rears (case/carrier, differential, gears, R&P) are thinner and weaker than the 57-64 parts.
The 62-63 Chevy II rears are even thinner and weaker than the 55-56 rears. STAY AWAY FROM ALL OF THE ABOVE!
The Canadian versions of these rears (used up through 64 in Chevys and Pontiacs) are just as good as the USA built Chevy versions if you should run across a Canadian built rear.
Chevy posi rears that were built at the Detroit Gear and Axle plant have the thin P.
The Buffalo (NY) built posi rears have the thick P.
The Canadian rears have a small P in a totally different location (very rare in the lower USA).
Corvettes only got Detroit rears (with the thin P).

Wow! That is uncanny. Just found out this week I may be doing the same. You might have seen the thread in which I learned a great deal. Lots of 3rd members out there from non-corvette applications, just make sure you get a Posi, if that's what your want. Please keep us advised as to how you like the switch please.

For those people who have not seen the article I put together several years ago about how to convert a NON-posi to posi, here is what has to be done to a NON-posi case/carrier so that a posi unit can be installed.
The non-posi case/carrier has a gusset which is NOT in a posi case/carrier. A portion of this gusset has to be removed all the way to the edge of the wall, as below.
There is absolutely disadvantage to doing this conversion, if it is desirable to retain the ORIGINAL, numbers matching case/carrier. The ONLY possible downside is that there will not be the big P on the outside---------------but you can always add a repo posi tag to the filler plug.
