I took my measurements with my car on the floor and me with a bad right knee that won't allow me to kneel and with minimal light and .....

PS: We can also wait for Mike to come back off his holiday and give us his measurement. Then we will have three different numbers to consider.
Thanks Larry, appreciate the kind words.

You've no doubt forgotten more about these cars than I'll ever know, so any discrepancy in our measurements should be weighted heavily towards yours, bum knee and all

Is your left/right pipe the same relative length to the cover on both sides? There could be lot's of variation between cars. Tolerance stack on engine, body, frame placement and overall length of the pipes.
Good question, was wondering the same thing, so I measured the other (right) side: 5 3/8". I'd be interested in seeing some pics or measurements from other factory sidepipe guys.

Just for the heckuvit, here's another few pics - mine from another angle, and a few NCRS Duntov award sidepipe cars from Greg Wyatt's website:

I'll measure mine when I get home.

Update...left side 6 1/8" and right side 5 7/8". This is a factory side pipe car that has under gone a body off frame resto, so these measurements may or may not be as she left the factory.

Measured the passenger side today. Same 5-1/8 inch distance as the other side (drivers side) measured last night.

Lighting today was better for measuring, but right knee is still out and hinders bending low. Measurements may be off +/- 1/16 inch.

I'll probably get blasted for saying this but when I installed mine, I didn't like the pipe extending so far into the rear wheel well area. I cut out nearly an inch and rewelded them to get them to a position I liked better. They are not quite as far in as your first original picture but they don't stick out super far like some of the others. I just didn't like the idea of them being that close to the tire and I thought they looked a little funny as well. And no it didn't change the sound in any way.
