Good luck with your project. One of the things I always do when I start a project is to detail the engine bay.Dosnt matter if the engine is coming out latter on but it makes me feel good about the car/project.Its kinda like a taste of what it will look like whan its done.some thing to day dream about how good itss going to look.I also keep it driveable as long as I can nothing is worse then pushing it in and out of the garage.

At least yours only has acorns in it. Mine had polywogs, lillypads and snakes  It was a very expensive fish pond. Took the better part of 3 years (by myself mostly) to get it to look like this. You can do it. Hang in there bro......

The valve covers could be the original finned style that came with the high-horse motors painted, do they say corvette, and are they Aluminum?

The valve covers do say corvette and they are aluminum. The engine in the vette is not the original, I have the original and i am currently rebuilding it. The engine in it is a corvette 327 but it is a little more radical than i want 12:1 compression and a slighhtly radical cam makes it need higher octane than i can get at the pumps.

Plans for the vette:

This vette was the third one made in 66 I know that by the serieal numbers on the car, yes they numbers match on the engine. Most of the nunmbers match. The shift in the car is not the original i did find the original while tearing out the inside of the car. My dad left the car to me and i am planning on doing full resto on it. However I plan to upgrade the suspension to improve performance. I will eventually replace the engine i have in it with the original. Except for wheels and tires the entire car will look stock. I plan on keeping the original transmision however as of latley been thinking about going to powere steering. unuasal things about the car are 32 gallon tank, 3rd one made, high horsepower 327, basically i want to rebuild this car very close to stock except make it corner a bit better and maybe a little easier to parrallel park. oh yah i am planing on keeping everything i replace on the car and maybe one day returning it to a stock vehicle.

Any suggestions welcome

An original "big tank" midyear coupe is a rare and expensive bird...conceivably in the 100K+ range if restored correctly. I would proceed carefully and try to learn as much about these cars as you can before you start any serious restoration. I would seriously reconsider any modifications to a car this rare and unique. There are many unique "big tank" items.....the cover...even the rear quarter panels are different. Chuck

Do I see a 'vert here?

Must not be an original big tank car.

"I plan on keeping the original transmision however as of latley been thinking about
going to power steering."

It pays to shop around for the power steering kits. Most of the big parts houses advertise them for around $795.
I got mine from Cranes - a $595 special. The latest Hemmings has them even cheaper.

Here is your welcome suggestion: Do anything you want with it, but don't throw anything out. Every old worn out part, nut, bolt, and screw should be kept and tagged so that you (or the next owner) will know what was in the car when you got it. Years pass, and so do memories.

I had a friend in high school - who had a 66 and a 65 coupe in the garage back in 87 (when I got my 66), He was 42 and a postal carrier in great shape, but he died unexpectedly in that February, and I spent a very long weeekend helping his widow figure out what all the stuff in the garage was. Both cars had been disassembled for years.

Aside from that, you need the old stuff to tell if the repro parts are even close to looking like the originals. Most of it is *&^^%^%%^..

Doh....yes, you do see a vert. I did too, but my brain didn't engage. All original big tank cars were coupes...had to be to put the 36 gallon tank in. Chuck

:yesnod:

You might want to drive it some before changing to power steering.
while "rebuilding" the '64 I considered a PS change over.
But after finally driving it I find manual steering just fine for me.
Good Luck, keep the pictures coming.

I'll bite what is a VERT. Is it possible that i do have a big tank how can i check? short from filling the gas tank.

I am new to this so i could be talking out my butt too.

Secondly,

My Father left me the car with the condition that i one day will it to my child. So this car will never be sold, least it would have to be over my dead body. I will honor this as i hope all my children do. For that reason the value of the car really does not matter to me. I just want it to be beautiful again I want to hear that purr ... ok growl.

I do would like to glorify the history but i plan on concintrating more on the "Dad found it in a junk yard restored it once and now son is bringing it back again"

Please correct me if i am wrong about something i will not take it as a knock or anything.

Vert is short for convertable. No "big tank" if it is a convertable, those were only reserved for coupe's.... and no they don't growl they ROAR just ask VietNamVett about his Furkenstien..... and how he waves to other Vettes....   Oh, make sure you practive the :seeya at least three times a day..... :jester

No dumb questions here.... just the owners.... :hat

The 36 gallon gas tank option is very rare. The tank is huge, and is/was available in coupes only because the gas tank literally filled the entire area behind the seats. There is no room in a convertible ('vert, for short) to put that size tank in. Chuck
