Garage door opener warning
I have a Chamberlain model 8500 liftmaster garage door opener. In the middle of the night the garage door started opening and closing on its own. It remained in the open position. After diagnosing the problem it seems the control panel on the inside of the garage fails. This is a very common problem with this opener. I have attached a photo of the problem opener.

I was a service tech who installed lift master door openers three years ago. not once did I ever have to replace the wall button. the circuit board in the opener it self is the one that goes bad first

I had a encoder go out on me (would not go fully up or down, with random stop points), but no issues with the control panel.

Have had it for about 3 years (replaced a junk Wayne-Dalton).

Probably a smart idea to set the manual latches on the door if you’re going away for an extended period of time.

I do it without fail if gone for more than an overnight trip...also put zip ties in the opener shuttle release or you can buy a commercial product (Garage Guard GS100)!

Also, I wonder how many homes have all the doors and windows protected by a security system but not the garage door. Our house had the garage windows on the system but not the door so I had it added.

I have had 3 of them fail, but only one of them opening the door in the middle of the night; the other 2 just refused to work.... the last time it happened I called the manufacturer and they said that they have been having problems and they sent me a new one.

Never hurts to reprogram the door opener with a different code if you find the door mysteriously open sometimes. Many folks don't do well at randomizing the setting (dip switches of whatever)...and a neighbor might have done the same thing...

I have had the garage doors tied into our house alarm system in our last two residences. Pretty good precaution.

Garage door
I put a small light above my security keypad that lights up when the garage door is open.I added a switch at the door and used the 12 volt power from my security system to run it. At a glance I see if the door is open. I also have a dead bolt lock on the door to secure it all during my absence. Jerry

My Challenger opener is at least 30 years old and lifts a solid wood door. Zero issues of any kind. Dennis

Burning Brakes
I had a door go up one time without explanation. Then controller wouldn't work to shut the door, but I cycled the breaker to reset it, and the system returned to normal operation. The weather had been bad, so maybe it was a lightning strike nearby--never figured it out for sure.
That always made me nervous, though. I later installed some wireless switches at the outlets powering the door openers, allowing me to cut the power while I'm away, without having to open the breaker. I can also turn the door opener back on from outside the garage, using the switch remote, which is handy. The switches are fairly inexpensive (see link), and they will handle the current draw of a jackscrew opener:

Years ago I heard of a door which was activated by a neighbor's TV remote. I suppose technology has advanced since then and such could not happen with current models.
