Rather than J-clips, isn't it more interesting that there are no holes for the mounting screws?

Bill,
I don't want to hijack the OP's thread, but the early cars used a different sending unit with a welded compression fitting. They were all steel until the fuel pump.

thanks Mike.... it is interesting to note in the CC reference that what is a rubber line on my 62 is a separate steel line on the earlier cars

According to the 61 AIM, a 61 should also have the rubber section. Mine does not.

As others have indicated It is not weather individual deviations from the norm exist, it is what people will accept IF you are having the car judged or want to challenge others in situations like this.
My dad passed in 2011. I'm not challenging anyone. We all agree about the AIM, and how it "should be".

This car has been in our complete control every day since it rolled off the dealer lot (Fencl, Chevy in Oak Park, IL) in December 1960. It's never been in any shop for other than tires. It's never been painted. It's only been touched by him and me.

I've read numerous stories about the factory using old parts... using incorrect parts.. leaving parts off... when they needed to keep the line going.

We've gone far enough OT.. Have a good day gents!

Early 61's had steel lines. Not sure exactly when it was changed but seems to have been within the first few months of production. Mine was produced in the first month and had the steel line connection to the sender.

Maybe just ran out of clips at the factory that day??? But no clips on my original 1-owner car.
My one-family '59 has no clips on the sides or back. Fasteners screwed into the fiberglass.

So in the discussion there is conflicting info. The AIM shows screws going into the fiberglass while the tank cover is held in place by the J clips or am I missing something.

the J-clips are installed on the lip of the tank opening, the screws thread through the cover and into the J-clips
