Default Re-Chrome Bumpers VS. NEW Bumpers

I need to get my front bumpers re-chromed on my C2 Corvette. Some of these re-chroming companies charge the price of brand new bumpers around $400 each. Some bumper re-chroming companies try to give a price for both driver and show quality price. Sounds like all hype to me.
Anybody come across a place that will chrome bumpers, with high quality and for a fair price??

I had mine done in Fresno California for $200 each. The shop only does show chrome and they are very nice. I also work in a motorcycle museum and we send all of our parts to the same shop. Where are you located? Just for the record, the new re-pop bumpers are never going to be the quality of original parts. They are easy to spot.

Where are you located? I pay $250 a bumper for triple plated re-chroming. If you buy new ones, the USA made ones from Paragon are excellent. The finish and fit are perfect.

With chroming, you get what you pay for. There is a HUGE difference between driver and show quality. With show quality, they will spend a lot more time dipping in copper, polishing out blemishes/scratches and more copper. Its a time consuming process but eventually the copper fills every void and when the final chrome layer goes on, it will be show quality.

I would suggest you find someone in your area who has bought repop bumpers and have a close look at them to see if you are happy with the quality of the chrome finish. If your bumpers are just old chrome with no rust, dents or big scratches, I would be inclined to have them re-chromed.

I was faced with a similar problem last year when car was painted. I went for rechrome with Dick at Virginia vettes . Good job fair price. The orig bumpers went on very easy when I got them back. I worry with new ones the fitment plus quality overall in today’s made in China world.

Wow! That's a hell of a price Doc!

I just took all 4 bumpers into the chrome shop (Sacramento), and the seat "hockey bars" are 2K!

Is there an appearance difference in "color" between show chrome and driver chrome?
Or is the difference just related to surface imperfections?

How well or how long do the repop bumpers hold up? Cheap chrome jobs on repop parts may only last a few years?

Not an expert but I think in general I think they skip the copper coating with driver quality. Show chrome is often regarded as triple plated - copper, nickel, chrome. Without the copper there probably is a slight difference in color cast.

Meklek's? They're not only super reasonable, but the chrome they turn out is better than factory. I'd use them over any repro part!

The shop that I used is New Age Plating in Fresno, CA. The price of $200 per bumper was part of a package deal with four bumpers and four hockey sticks. The total price was $950. That was two years ago, so the price might be higher today. I would be surprised if it was a lot higher. The place is big and they do every type of plating, nickel, cad, etc.

It really depends on where you are located because shipping prices can really add up. BTW, it might help if you add that info to your user profile.

This is who I've used for 30 years. BTW, they all triple plates. That;s just part of the process.

For those in southern California, I used Orange County Plating for the bumpers on my 67 and they turned out very nice as well. That was 15 years ago and they still look great.

After restoring my 2 cars I've learned my lesson. Whenever possible, bumpers included, always go with original. At least you know they will fit.
