Wow, Really Wild !!
Is everything on that car "prototype" ? Looks almost hand forged and built....
Is the AirBox's function Totally and completey just to Cool the back brake's ?
What kind of racing was this one built for ?.....
Any Race history on this car ?
Sorry for all the questions... I think I'm as excited about it as you are :D

Great find - looks great!
The "airbox" on the left inner fender is the cold air intake/air filter housing for the fuel injection, and also feeds cold air through a hose into the rocker panel cavity to the left rear brake; a round fabric air hose on the right inner fender feeds cold air in the same manner to the right rear brake. All of those fiberglass parts were hand-laid, as only 43 "air-box" fuelie cars were built, and only 51 with "Big Brakes", most of which were the same cars. These were VERY expensive options in 1957 - the "air-box" option added $250 over and above the cost of the $484.00 283/283 fuelie engine, and the "Big Brake" option by itself was another $780.00! Base price of a '57 in those days was $3,176.00.

So an "AirBox" and "Big brake's" were a GM Option in 57 ?
Those must have only been bought by Racing teams ?
How many are accounted for ?
Sorry to sound so dumb..... I have not done my homework.... :yesnod:

The car was raced extensively on the West Coast until 69 when it was parked for 30+ years. I have pics and log books starting in 63. The first 6 years are unaccounted for.
I've heard 10-15 are accounted for.

Re: 57 Airbox pics............Maybe if I did it right (Duntov-097)
The first pictures are a little dark, but I know EXACTLY what I'm looking at, so I recognize what everything is! Excellent! Back when these cars were nearly worthless (and VERY WELL used), I had no clue as to what their significance was! Now, unfortunately, there is no way I can afford to own one. Although I have sort of built my own using a 56 as a starting point.
Itsa56,
Don't feel bad about about not having much knowledge of 57 Airbox cars. They were not only rare, but they were also of very little value to no one except those few who wanted a really competative car. Once the later cars became availabe with better parts and the 57s became used up, tore up and discarded, their value and/or level of interest dropped to nearly nothing. But today, they are probably one of the most valuable Corvettes ever made, and in my book, even more valuable than a true L-88 car.
Also, because of these cars' age and rarity, VERY few people even have a clue what they are. Even though my 56 Looks VERY much like an Airbox car on the surface (I've cloned most of the 57 Airbox features), I NEVER hear comments such as 'WOW, LOOK AT THIS RARE CORVETTE! THIS IS REALLY A VERY RARE CAR!!!" When I display it at shows, I have had a sign made explaining some of the features. When some (very few) people read the sign, they just turn and walk away, obviously never understanding what they have seen. So, again, don't feel bad. Just go dig out what little info you can find and read up on them.
I think the figure of 10-15 surviving Airbox cars is about right. Including this one, I've seen 5-6 total.

Great pics ! If you have a photo editing program. Look for something like - fit maximum to client or screensize, then look for something like - crop. You would then outline the car in the picture, click crop and that is all that you would see. Play around with it and you will get the hang of it. Just a few tips.

Re: 57 Airbox pics............Maybe if I did it right (Grey Ghost)
Thanks for the comments.... Couple more questions..... :yesnod:
Can you take a picture of the front of the car and post it... I'm curious where the 2 front air box's "enter" the car ?
Also, I wonder why thay (whoever thay are) did'nt put into actual use the 2 top mounted fender "fake air scoops"... mine have little silver screen's inside the front fake scoops... seems like to me, that if they were searching for cold fresh air, they would have opened up those pre-existing fender scoops ??
man, what a project, your a lucky boy.....

Re: 57 Airbox pics............Maybe if I did it right (itza56)
The airbox on RPO 579E cars (driver's side) and inlet hose (pass. side) got their air through holes on either side of the radiator support; cars without 579E (fuelie) and with RPO 684 ("Big Brakes") had an inlet hose on the driver's side like the one on the pass. side. All the diagrams are in the A.I.M. under RPO 579E and 684.
The top fender scoops are purely decorative, and were a late addition by Styling; they're too small and in the wrong place to be of any use for brake cooling.
