But what about applications such as a simple white wall radial for my '63? I don't think it's necessary to go through a classic repro tire company to buy tires like this, is it? Would it be true to say buying nice, premium radials with a white wall similar to stock is a better choice? In quality and price?

Anyone consider this?
I have whitewall Hankooks on my bone stock 1970 Chevelle Malibu convertible. Don't push them hard. Great tires for taking my wife to dinner or on a nice weekend drive. Cheap enough to throw away every five years.

I don't know why anyone who wanted regular whitewalls or blackwalls would even consider Diamondback or Coker.

First of all I think people posting here on this subject should designate if they are referring to their experience with either company regarding WHAT tires they had radial or bias belted because no matter WHO's tires you buy you can not fairly compare the two.

IMO unless you are looking for C1 original type "pie crust" WWWs for show or C2 red or gold lines in radials there is no need to buy from these specialty companies. Recently I wanted some WWW radial tires in a size not available from either Coker or Diamondback and found a company, Cali tires that makes custom size WW radials from Cooper tires for my 57. I also just bought a set of Keystone Klassic wheels so I bought a set of radial tires from a local tire store that are WRL but I will turn them so the black walls are out. Unless you are looking for the specific tires I indicated above there are a lot more tires and sizes available from you local tire distributors.

To add to your reply to Steve-

I have Cooper Trendsetter whitewalls on the 64, and they handle as well as you could want a 205/75 tires to do on the track- which is to say they aren't great but the vanity of a 205 means giving up performance.

For real performance I like a 17" in a 255 or so and a 40 odd series like Lou runs.

Already did it. I run Tiger Paw AWP-II whitewalls on the split window. Ride nice, look good and reasonably priced. Some say the tread pattern doesn’t look “vintage” though. Doesn’t bother me.

In 40 years, I've had three Corvettes with Coker tires (the cars came with the Coker tires, I didn't buy them). All three were the "Coker Classic Radials", 205/75-15. One set still had several broken-off aluminum fins from the tire mold embedded in the tread, another set had radial cracks in the sidewalls in three of he four tires, and the third set (nearly new) simply couldn't be balanced due to construction (belt) errors, and they were WAY out of spec for loaded road-load variation.

That last set was so bad I just left them at the tire shop as I drove home on my Diamond Backs (see photo below of newly-mounted DB redlines with stack of abandoned Cokers behind them). Three out of three is bad odds in my book, so I simply will never buy Coker tires.

I just bought Diamondback Michelin Pilot Sport A/S for my 67.
2 225/50/18 and 2 235/50/18

I had them mounted last Thursday. They required very little weights.

Friday I drove about 40 miles to a car show and the ride was great, after I decreased the air pressure about 8 pounds in each tire. They had them inflated to 40 pounds.

This is the second set of Diamondbacks I've bought, both sets Michelin, the other set were great tires also.

Diamond Back only sells radial tires - they have nothing to do with bias-ply tires.

They have "period correct" tread radials

MidAmerica has Silvertown bias ply. I don't have a clue who makes them.

True, but that's not what he asked - he asked:

I was giving him options. What about my next post?

Check with Discount Tire for the Uniroyal Tiger Paw Touring WSW. I've had them on my '66 for the past couple of years and really like them. Were a huge improvement over the WSW tires I had before.
