What States still have car inspections
I was originally from Illinois and that I remember till I left in 1971 we never had a State inspection for cars. Maybe they should have for all the ones you see broke down along the roads. Any way I then came to Indiana where I have lived sense 1973 and they had a State inspection for cars back then and did have up until the mid to late 70's and then it was voted out and we have never has a car inspection again. I read on the Forum where I think it was in TX. that a member had his car inspected and it passed. So I was wondering how many States make you have you car inspected still. Do you think it is a good thing or is it just a money thing for the States to make more money from us car owners? What do you think. Should States make us have cars inspected for safety reasons or not and does your State make you have your car inspected to meet State regulations for safety reasons?

My wife is from PA. They have serious inspections of the car all over. Probably good- rust makes a lot of their cars Swiss cheese in short order.
my TN county has only emissions inspections which are a tax in my mind. We had safety inspections in the city years ago according to some old stickers I have had on cars. Light over the years. No longer.

Oklahoma used to have a mandatory annual state inspection. I was a certified inspector at a Chevrolet dealership. The cost to the customer was $5 and it was a total pain in the *** for the inspector. Too bad it's gone, there is now so much crap out there on our roads, broken windshields, no side glass, missing bumper fascias and missing bumpers and lotsa' donut spares that have been on that same axle for a bit further than 50 miles.

Yes, Texas. A total waste of time. All the modern cars I've had inspected for 40 years and never had a fail. The "emission" test is the absolute worst. They hook up an OBD2 reader and charge you $25. It is long since past to get rid of this yearly PITA.

I bought an enclosed trailer last year and found out that the registration fee is almost the same as my Tundra plus I have to get it inspected yearly, about $80 total. For a trailer I hardly ever use! I have to hook everything up and tow it down to the inspection station. Talk about a rip off that just totally chaps my ***!

I live in PA, not only do we have yearly state inspections, we have to do emissions as well. Classic cars, manufactured more than 10 years prior to the current year and of discontinued production still need yearly inspections. Whereas antique cars(25 years and up) are exempt.

It's funny that CA does emission tests but could care less if the wheels fall off.
It was me doing the one in TX. There's always going to be junk on the road,,,and rust areas can be bad. But in place like TX where its warms and dry...it's just a money grab.
Years ago...when my sister moved away from home...I told her to find out which inspection station was the nastiest and meanest one that anyone knew about. The guy who actually popped the hubcaps to ck lug nuts and jacked it up to ck bearings etc. I told her it would be the best $20 she spent if she did it every 6 mos to get the whole car checked out from top to bottom even if it failed.

I thought Virginia still had them; used to be a big joke in the 60s. Every 6 months IIRC years ato.
Lots of clunkers on the roads....there was a whole black market in illegitimately obtained inspection stickers... You could count on getting hit for headlight aiming at one inspection, wiper blades at the next one and then shocks and brakes and tires round robin as time went on.
Pretty much a revenue center for the state and garages.

The purpose of these inspections are vehicle safety, however, how often do you hear of an accident caused by mechanical failure in non-inspection states? We do not have them in Florida, and I never hear of an accident from mechanical failure.

People tend not to keep cars over 10 years anymore, often much less and the cars can tell you when there are issues, such as low tire pressure (preventing uneven tire wear); my 2016 Durango even told me when a turn signal lamp in front burned out.
I think the cars running the roads now are mechanically pretty sound in most cases; the drivers are inattentive jerks though.

Missouri has both emissions and safety inspections and you have a choice of one or two year plate. Thank God I don't have to deal with that on the old cars with YOM plates.

North Carolina still has them. Both emission and safety for gas engine vehicles, while safety only for the diesel engined vehicles. Older classic and antique vehicles are exempt.

Virginia had inspections back in the 60s when I was in high school. Don't know if they still do. Nice cash cow for the State licensed private garages. If your car fails, they can fix it for you right there.
I dont worry too too much about the mechanical condition of most cars on the road but I think drivers should have mental checkups every 6 months.

Florida used to have a very thorough annual inspection: brake stopping test on a machine, ball joints by lifting the car and then levering the wheel up/down, etc... and then they went away...
the biggest joke is mandatory car insurance at the time of plate renewal. get insurance for the renewal and then cancel it; a TON of uninsured on the roads...
