Reflective sun damage

Reflective sun damage
Went to car show yesterday and parked under some trees for shade. All was good until about noon and it was hot dog time for me. Was gone no more than 20 minutes and walking toward car noticed big half dollar sized bubble in the hood. The sun had made its way thru some open limbs and reflection from breather cover did its thing. Needless to say I was irate.. mainly because i usually cover it but thought I was OK in the shade and didn't do it. My question to those who have gone thru this situation is..does insurance pay for this sort of damage or am i just screwed? I have NCM insurance by the way..thanks

No help here, but I feel for you. Nothing worse than making a mistake when you know better beforehand. BTDT far too many times, less as I get older and wiser, though.

Comprehensive coverage should cover it, read your policy under comp and see if it is excluded. Good luck and sorry to here you have to go through this.

Recently had a friend that had the same problem. I never though to ask him if he used his insurance.
Here's a picture of the underside of the hood. If you click on the picture it will take you to flickr and you can see two other pictures and if you click the picture again it will enlarge.

This car is Riverside Red, not orange - that's how intense the Florida sun was this day...I only opened the hood for a few seconds to snap the pic. Word to the wise!

Hmm, if no one buys the spare air cleaner cover I have for sale, I may keep it and paint it flat black and red to use for shows.

However, my insurance company made good, paid in full, didnt blink at the weird story and told me to call them if there were further issues.

That really sucks.
I assume the problem lies with the dimpled area in the center of the air cleaner lid. I wonder if you could solve the problem by placing a large fender washer painted flat black over that dimple when the hood is up?

Oddly enough it's not the center portion that causes the burn. I did a study and posted pictures on the Forum. if you can't find it searching let me know and I'll put them back up. It's the outer rim that causes the reflection. I covered the center portion with a piece of paper, set it in the sun and still had the reflection. I then put tape around the outside of the rim section, the raised section around the edge and that stopped the reflection, so it's definitely coming from the outside. As I said I have pictures if you'd like to see the results in the study.

Can someone explain why the reflection off the bumpers does not do the same damage to the paint? If you think about it, the body is closer to the reflection off the bumpers than the air cleaner, so one would think it would be damaged also. The only thing I've ever come up with is the lid acts to more preciously pin point the heat of the sun into one location whereas, the bumper reflection is more spread out. Any thoughts on this?
