Jump over to the C5 Section (General Discussion) and page for Iceburgh68. I'm pretty certain that he did his floor with that pattern. He might give you some tips!

Just had a floor done with black and white tile. It seems that in vinyl flooring there is no longer solid black and solid white tiles. They all have 2-3 shades of gray "flakes" in them to hide dirt and other foreign objects.
These tiles are about 1/8" thick and are glued down then sealed, waxed, and buffed. I think that linoleum or "peel and stick" tile squares would not hold up very long.
This picture was taken before the floor was waxed.

My friend and I did this to his garage floor last winter. We decided to block four tiles together for a larger pattern. Turned out really nice and wish I had a pic to post. I call his garage the "garage-Mahall".

There are quite a few who have done their floors in the checkerboard style and the one you might be thinking of is "ohsixx". Do a search on his forum name and you should find the thread that was in the C5 section earlier today.
We used the Armstrong commercial tiles and they have held up well. As mentioned earlier, once the cement floor is cleaned well and the tiles laid with vinyl cement, go over it with floor sealer (we used three coats) and then three coats of a heavy traffic floor wax.
