Default 63 choke tube query

Hi all, I have a Carter 3461S on my 63 300HP convertible and have only just had the carb restored and fitted to the car. I now need a choke tube and have been looking at various sites to find one to suit. However the choke tubes that I have found listed on various sites seem to be for the other HP ranges and not for the 300HP. Can someone please advise which choke tube I would need and where I could buy one. I will need to ship it to Australia.

Many thanks
Mark

There are three "tubes" or pipes that make up the choke system. One is pressed into the manifold, one on the inlet side, and the outlet chromed pipe that leads to the choke housing.

So which one are you talking about?

All carbureted engines used the same internal manifold and inlet pipes. The WCFB may have used a different outlet pipe to the choke housing than the AFB.

The FI choke system is on the driver's side. The inlet and outlet pipes are unique to FI, but the internal exhaust manifold pipe may be the same.

There were about five different upper choke tubes used for all engines for 63. (manifold to carburetor/FI)

The one you need for your 300 HP 63 is GM part number 3826001 and is available in reproduction from Paragon Corvette supply.

Here's a link to the exact part your looking for.

The 250 and 300 HP engines used a plain pipe. It was not chrome.

Thanks Duke, I was talking about the upper choke tube which appears I have just been sent a link to the part I need. Thanks for your assistance.

Need to install the same part on my 1962 327/300hp. The lower end looks like it just press-fits into the exhaust manifold. Yes?

Actually, the manifold to choke housing tube is not exactly a press fit in the inner manifold tube. You should be able to work it in without using much force.

I think the tube for a 62 is a different part number than the one I posted for a 63.

Yes, it is a different part number but appears to be very similar both in shape and installation. I just wanted to determine if I needed any special tools to install it. Thanks for your help.

Yes, the original part and part number was for about 58 to 62, and early production 63. (the number was something like 3752???)
That part/number was used for early production 63 but I think engineering found that there was a clearance issue between the tube and air cleaner base on 63. The 62 base was higher, more flat but the new 63 base was lower than the 62.

I don't remember exactly how long the 62 tube was used on early 63's.

I ordered this part from Paragon and it arrived very quickly to Australia so thanks for the advice and the link.

The upper choke pipe should be a slip fit into the manifold pipe. Place the manifold end in first, then you have to put some bending force on the upper tube to get it to slip into the choke housing, but it should not be enough to put a permanent kink into the pipe. To be on the safe side you might want to loosen the carb mounting nuts.

...did this many times on my '63 L-76 to remove the carb or choke housing for cleaning. I expect your 300 HP engine uses a different upper choke pipe due to the slight difference in manifold height, so make sure you have the correct part.
