Two things I would change about B-J. 1. get some true experts talking/explaining things about the cars(and not just rehashing stuff over and over) and 2. Mute the damn auctioneer!!
We sat down on the bidding floor for about 30 min on Tuesday I couldn't take anymore I had to leave the area

Well we keep the live feed of the auction (internet telecast) going here in the barbershop. Havent seen any midyear action, but from what ive seen of other 60's type vehicle prices.... My gut tells me we might see a bit of an increase in mids this year. Surprising when you consider stock market is as nervous as a ***** in church right now, plus election year. My gut is usually right, so it will be fun to see. Non numbers chevelles. Elcamino's and that ilk are bringing darn good dough so far. Crowds building too and its only Wednesday. In case you are unaware, and give a flip....you can watch off tv hours of the live auction on the web. Pure auction. No BS breakaways with pretty girls out in the lobby telling you how great it all is,etc.

It seems that every car that goes up on the block sells, (I've only watched thru Wed. since I record them) are there no reserves set? When I see them on Mecum it seems as though almost EVERY car has a reserve. Why is that?

My buddy bought a 69 GTO Judge 66k, 67 Beaumont 47k and 65 GTO 94k last year and they sold yesterday at BJ. All his cars were freshly restored in concurs condition. The 69(838) sold for 66k, 67(693) for 30k and the 65(837) went for 69k. He ended up losing over 70k for the cars with 10% sellers commission, not to mention what it cost him for insurance and any maintenance on the cars for the last year. The auctions I have watched this new year many ordinary cars seemed to be selling for less than last year. I think you have to factor in the market going down so much and that people had to have their done in December before the market went down in Jan. The people who took out their money in Dec now can buy into the market and make some money and decided to save money and not bid up cars and buy a lower priced car.

With just a few exceptions (very high end cars), I don't believe BJ allows a reserve on cars at their auctions. Quite the cr@pshoot if you are a seller as 90Sundevil's friend found out.

Thats BJs business model, no reserve except for a very few exceptions. It draws more serious buyers knowing they're not wasting their time and almost every car will be sold. BJ also makes the commission on every car. And it makes for better TV.

I have never been to a BJ event but Mecum auctions were enough for me.
Bid it up to the reserve and then hope a real bidder jumps in...@ Mecum.
I have a acquaintance from the Cinci area who is having BJ auction off his 3 number 1 cars (55,56,57 Corvettes), his El Morocco 57 Chevy and a kick *** 57 Chevy Black Widow car.
Should be interesting. BIG $$$$$$$$$.

[QUOTE=northbound;1591431109]Its the market tastes. Did you see what mint mid to late 70s Trans Ams are going for? $70-100k! There was a 79 or 80 t/a that went for like 165k last night! Damn!

I know! My mouth dropped open several times. Guess I shoulda kept that '78 I had. What amazes me is the way people drool over all that gaudy pin striping and hood emblems. First thing I did when I got mine was to sand every bit of that crap off and have it repainted. Who knew?

Some of the ridiculously bid-up prices indicate a "My wallet's bigger than yours!" mentality.
Look for many of those cars at the next B-J: "Bid to HIGH SIX FIGURES in Scottsdale!"

In 1978 I was in the market for a new Trans Am, but they were such a hot seller, the dealers were selling them for way over sticker price. I went across the street to a Chevy dealer and bought this brand new Z28. Wonder what it would go for today.

Ok its friday 5:35 cst. A 65 small block just went for $85,000 plus commission. Yea it was silver silver. I dont care if it had an urn with Zora Duntovs ashes in the passenger seat.....thats ridiculous. I rest my case.
