58 Convertible Install - 2 Questions
Just have 2 simple questions and hoping someone can help.
1. What size SS staples are used?
2. How is the tack strip attached to the bows and how do you remove the old tack strips??
Thank you

I did an article on replacing the tack strips on my 61, which should be the same.
If you want a copy let me know.

Joe's writeup is excellent. I replaced the tack strips on my '59 25 years ago, but I forgot what I did. I needed a refresher course several years ago and Joe sent me his doc. Very helpful.
By far, the most difficult was the header. The profile of the channel is a 2 sided reverse angle. I bought the correct tack strip kit but I had to shave the sides to get it installed, along with using a wood block and hammer to dive it in on the side. You cannot slide it in from one end to the other.
The #4 bow was easy as it's flat. IIRC I used contact cement on that one.
The rear bow I had was a repro and included the strip so I didn't need to install that one, but also flat.
I use a pneumatic gun, actually 2, one on each side. I use 3/8" staples on most of it, but the front header is shallow so I use 1/4" staples there. On the #4 bow, I use 3/8" mostly but where the side rear window straps sit I use slightly trimmed 1/2"(apx 7/16") as the thickness of the pads and straps are thicker. Also at the overlapping vinyl and at the hide-em strip full length.

As soon as I find it I will get it to everyone who asked for it.
I have four computers and many back up drives and I do not remember where I stored it.
Ahhhh, to get old!

If you can't find it I'm sure I have it somewhere too, not at my fingertips right now though.

ps BTW, Dave Z (DZVette) made a PDF of my soft top writeup I did. But it's too big for attaching here, just a little bit.
I'll ask if he can get it a bit smaller to fit here.
Of course if Comcast didn't hose my website I'd have put it there for download.

It's not a 100% guide and has much to do with repro bows but has some links at the bottom with a boatload of photos for reference of a entire installation of frame and vinyl. Some day I'll try to add a tutorial of the whole process.
BTW, Dave did a ton of EXTRA enhancements to the thread with special notations and pictures and descriptive comments. He really needed to ad his name on top too. Everybody bug him to do that, okay? :-):
He does awesome technical writing for us all and is a major asset to the gang.

See attached. I dropped Dave a note right after my post and he did it for us right away. Thanks Dave !

Below is a link to an earlier thread that contains two PDF files of Joe's (Plaidside) description of the tack strip installation (see post #2).
