Default LS1 and 6pd or Auto in a C1

What needs to be done or modified to put ls1 and a 6pd or auto into a 1959 Corvette. I have a stock frame, and stock suspension and I'm not about about to pop for the C4 suspension and frame modification from Paul Newman. I plan on buying the motor and trans mounts from him, but what else needs to be done

Try paging Rich Lagasse. He can enlighten you on all the details! He recently did one gorgeous '62 with a similar setup!

BAD_SS_94:

I cannot comment directly on the LS1, but I did put an injected engine (Ram Jet 350) and a T-56 6 speed in a '62.

One of the things you will need to add is a high pressure fuel pump, either in-tank or in-line, and a return fuel line. I used an in-line pump, using the stock tank's drain hole as an outlet, and used the stock outlet line for the return.

Of course you will have to do a lot of wiring harness changes to accommodate the injected motors requirements. If you are going to use a “used” engine/transmission, get all (and I do mean ALL) of the parts from the donor car.

Use of a "single wire" alternator makes wiring a little simpler.

You will probably need to modify the exhaust system to mate with the exhaust manifolds.

Are you adding power steering or air conditioning? If not the installation will be much easier.

The transmission I used was a Borg Warner T-56 from a '94 Camaro. This is a really large (physically) transmission (about 125 lbs.) and has basically the same gear ratios as a C5. Other than a new trans mount bracket, it also required some modification to the transmission tunnel. The shifter on this transmission is about 2" further back that the stock location and is centered on the trans. I also used a hydraulic clutch which required locating the clutch master cylinder on the firewall and extending the clutch pedal rod to reach it. A new driveshaft will also probably be necessary.

After two years my car is finally complete (I think) and I hope to drive it up to Carlisle this Thursday. If you are there, look for a fawn beige ’62 (with Fuel Injection emblems) out in the Fun Display. If you have any specific questions, I’ll be glad to help if I can.

Charles

Rich:
Saw your post a few minutes before mine. Hope to see you in Carlisle.

If you decide to go with the LS1 you will need to make sure you get the LS1 compatible T56 or 4L60e. The input shaft for the LS1 is different than that on the standard, earlier GM transmissions. Wiring wise, getting a harness kit from a place such as Street & Performance (www.hotrodlane.cc) should make it much easier to get that part of the project up and running. It'd definately be cool if you decide to go with a LS1/T56 combo in your C1.
